Two of its disciplines rank among the top 1% in ESI global rankings, with clinical medicine in the top 5‰. The university has over 6,600 faculty and medical staff, and nearly 30,000 students, including full-time undergraduates, postgraduates, and international students. It boasts two national characteristic specialty programs, three national first-class undergraduate programs, and 14 provincial or ministerial-level research platforms. The school was originally founded by Dr. Li Zuwei, its first president, at the foot of Diecai Mountain. In 1956, it moved to the Lequn campus. In 1977, it resumed enrollment under the unified national college entrance examination system. In 2006, it was selected as a National College Student Cultural Quality Education Base.
