Founded in 1935 as Guangxi Provincial Guilin Senior Midwifery and Nursing School, it was upgraded to Guilin Medical Junior College in 1958, and then to Guilin Medical College in 1987. In 1993, it was authorized to recruit international students. It gained master's degree authorization in 2006, was listed as a doctoral degree authorization construction unit in 2014, and established a postdoctoral research station in 2015. In February 2025, with approval from the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Guilin Medical University. As of October 2025, the university covers an area of over 1500 mu. It has three campuses, 20 schools (departments), 4 directly affiliated hospitals, and 29 clinical teaching hospitals. It offers 27 undergraduate programs and 4 higher vocational programs. The university has one postdoctoral research station, one professional doctoral degree category, five first-level master's degree disciplines, and eight professional master's degree categories. Two of its disciplines rank among the top 1% in ESI global rankings, with clinical medicine in the top 5‰. The university has over 6,600 faculty and medical staff, and nearly 30,000 students, including full-time undergraduates, postgraduates, and international students. It boasts two national characteristic specialty programs, three national first-class undergraduate programs, and 14 provincial or ministerial-level research platforms. The school was originally founded by Dr. Li Zuwei, its first president, at the foot of Diecai Mountain. In 1956, it moved to the Lequn campus. In 1977, it resumed enrollment under the unified national college entrance examination system. In 2006, it was selected as a National College Student Cultural Quality Education Base. In 2012, it passed the clinical medicine professional certification by the Ministry of Education and was selected as one of the first batch of pilot universities for the 'Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program', undertaking the reform pilot project for the five-year clinical medicine talent cultivation model.
