About the university
Hainan Medical University (Hainan Medical University), abbreviated as 'Haiyi', is located in Haikou City, Hainan Province. It is positioned as a teaching and research university and is the only public medical university in the Hainan Free Trade Port. It is a pilot university for the first batch of the National Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program, one of the first batch of undergraduate institutions for comprehensive professional reform by the Ministry of Education, a construction unit of Hainan's characteristic high-level universities, and an institution with the qualification to recommend graduates for postgraduate admission without examination. The university traces its origins to the private Haiqiang Advanced Medical Technical School founded in 1947 by Lin Xiaohai, who also served as its first president, and the private Hainan University Medical College founded in 1948 with Song Ziwen as its first board chairman. The two schools merged in 1951 to form Hainan Medical Specialized School (which piloted undergraduate education from 1977 to 1979), later renamed Hainan Medical College. In 1983, it was incorporated into Hainan University as the Medical Department of Hainan University. In 1993, with approval from the national education administrative authority, Hainan Medical College was officially established. In 2003, it was designated by the Ministry of Education as a unit for joint cultivation of master's degree students. In 2013, it was approved as a master's degree granting unit, and in 2019, as a doctoral degree granting unit. In May 2024, the Ministry of Education officially approved the renaming of Hainan Medical College to Hainan Medical University. As of January 2025, the university has three campuses: Chengxi, Guilin Yang, and Longhua, covering an area of 1,416.71 mu. It has 20 secondary colleges, 36 undergraduate programs, 4 first-level doctoral degree authorization points and a professional doctoral degree authorization point in clinical medicine, 7 first-level master's degree authorization points and 8 professional master's degree authorization points including clinical medicine. The university has 11,816 faculty, staff, and medical personnel, and 15,165 full-time students. In March 1951, the private Hainan University Medical College and the private Haiqiang Advanced Medical Technical School merged to form Hainan Medical Specialized School. In May 1953, the intermediate department of Hainan Medical College and the nursing school attached to Hainan People's Hospital merged to form the Eighth Health School of Guangdong Province, which was renamed Haikou Health School of Guangdong Province in November of the same year, and the medical college was discontinued. In 1965, the school resumed enrolling junior college students in medical programs. From 1966 to 1970, during the Cultural Revolution, the school suspended enrollment for six years. In 1983, the school resumed five-year undergraduate enrollment. In August of the same year, Hainan Medical College was incorporated into Hainan University as the Medical Department of Hainan University. In January 1989, the Medical Department of Hainan University was separated from Hainan University to establish Hainan Medical College (preparatory), adding programs in medical laboratory science and stomatology with a three-year duration.
