About the university

Shanghai University (SHU), established by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, is a full-time regular institution of higher education jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. It is a national "211 Project" and "Double First-Class" university, and has been selected for the "111 Plan," the Shanghai High-Level Local University Construction Program, the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, the Excellent Journalism and Communication Talent Education and Training Program 2.0, and one of the first batch of Shanghai universities to deepen innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. Originally founded on October 23, 1922, through cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China, Shanghai University was the first regular university initiated and actually led by the Communist Party of China. It was forcibly closed by the Kuomintang authorities after the April 12 Incident in 1927. In May 1983, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government decided to merge Fudan University Branch, Shanghai Foreign Language Institute Branch, East China Normal University Instrument and Electronics Branch, Shanghai University of Science and Technology Branch, Shanghai Mechanical College Light Industry Branch, and Shanghai Art School to re-establish Shanghai University. On May 27, 1994, the new Shanghai University was formed by merging Shanghai University of Technology (founded in 1960), Shanghai University of Science and Technology (founded in 1958), Shanghai University (founded in 1983), and Shanghai Science and Technology College (founded in 1959). It was selected as a "Double First-Class" university in 2017 and 2022. As of March 2025, the university has three campuses: Yanchang, Jiading, and Baoshan, covering an area of 1.8 million square meters, with a building area of 1.49 million square meters and a library collection of nearly 4.4902 million books. It has 31 colleges, 100 undergraduate programs, 28 first-level doctoral programs, 42 first-level master's programs, 1 second-level master's degree authorization point, 7 professional doctoral categories, 30 professional master's categories, and 24 postdoctoral research stations. The university has 3,410 full-time teachers, 19,736 graduate students, 19,315 full-time undergraduates, and 18,595 adult education students.
