About the university
Shanghai DianJi University is a regular institution of higher education oriented towards advanced manufacturing and modern service industries, with engineering as its core discipline and coordinated development of economics, management, literature, and arts. It has been selected for the Ministry of Education's 'Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program', the National New Engineering Research and Practice Project, the National Advanced Unit for Vocational Education, one of the first CDIO pilot universities in China, one of the first demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform in Shanghai, the Shanghai First-Class Undergraduate Construction Leading Plan, and the Shanghai First-Class Graduate Education Leading Plan. It is a member of the CDIO Engineering Education Alliance and a vice-chairman unit of the Shanghai Aeronautical Society. The university originated from the Shanghai Electrical Appliance Manufacturing School, founded in 1953 under the First Ministry of Machine-Building Industry. It was established by integrating some engineering classes from Shanghai High School, some young industrial worker classes and cadre classes from the National Shanghai Advanced Mechanical Vocational School, and some young industrial worker classes from Shanghai Industrial School. It subsequently evolved through the stages of Shanghai Electrical Machinery Manufacturing School, Shanghai Electrical Machinery Manufacturing Technology College, and Shanghai Electrical Machinery Technology College. In 1985, it was among the first in the country to pilot a five-year technical college education. In 2002, it was designated as a national key higher vocational college. In 2004, Shanghai Electromechanical Industry School and Shanghai Electromechanical Industry Workers’ University were merged into the university; in September of the same year, the university was renamed Shanghai DianJi University and upgraded to a bachelor's degree-granting institution. In 2011, it became a pilot unit for professional degree graduate programs under the 'National Special Needs Talent Cultivation Project'. In 2020, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a master's degree-granting unit. As of June 2025, the university has 16 secondary teaching units, 48 undergraduate programs, 7 associate degree programs, 12 master's degree authorization points, 13,600 full-time students, and 1,089 faculty and staff. As of October 2024, it has 2 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points and 10 professional degree category master's degree authorization points. The predecessor of Shanghai DianJi University was the Shanghai Electrical Appliance Manufacturing School, founded in 1953 by the First Ministry of Machine-Building Industry and established by the Electrical Appliance Industry Administration of the First Ministry of Machine-Building Industry. It was formed by integrating some engineering classes from Shanghai High School, some young industrial worker classes and cadre classes from the National Shanghai Advanced Mechanical Vocational School, and some young industrial worker classes from Shanghai Industrial School. It was a key secondary specialized school under the ministry, located at 690 Jiangchuan Road, Minhang District. Initially named 'Central First Ministry of Machine-Building Industry Shanghai Electrical Appliance Industry School', it was renamed First Ministry of Machine-Building Industry Shanghai Electrical Appliance Manufacturing School in 1954. In February 1958, the First Ministry of Machine-Building Industry, the Second Ministry of Machine-Building Industry, and the Ministry of Electrical Machinery Manufacturing Industry merged to form a new First Ministry of Machine-Building Industry. Shanghai Electrical Machinery Manufacturing School was subsequently placed under the Shanghai First Electromechanical Industry Bureau. In October 1958, Liu Shaoqi, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, personally visited the school and fully affirmed its school-running model and achievements of 'integrating school and factory, emphasizing both teaching and production'. In the same year, Zhao Xingzhi, Deputy Minister of the Education and Health Department of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, organized an on-site conference for exchanging experiences in work-study programs at Shanghai Electrical Machinery Manufacturing School for all secondary specialized schools in Shanghai. In 1960, Shanghai Electrical Machinery Manufacturing School was awarded the title of National Advanced Collective in the Cultural, Educational, and Health Front. In the 1960s, it also created the nationally popular 'Cai Detai Teaching Method'. In 1962, it was again placed under the leadership of the First Ministry of Machine-Building Industry and renamed First Ministry of Machine-Building Industry Shanghai Electrical Machinery Manufacturing School; in the same year, Shanghai Power Machinery Manufacturing School was merged into it.
