About the university

Nanjing Tech University, abbreviated as "NTU" or "Nanjing Tech", is a full-time undergraduate university located in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. It is under the administration of Jiangsu Province and jointly established by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government. The university is a Class A construction university under the Jiangsu High-Level University Construction Peak Plan, a key construction university in Jiangsu Province, a comprehensive reform pilot university in Jiangsu Province, a talent-strengthening pilot university in Jiangsu Province, one of the first batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, a national university practice education innovation and entrepreneurship base, one of the first batch of pilot universities for the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, a comprehensive reform pilot university for professional degree graduate education, and a pilot university for implementing the "30 Measures for Scientific and Technological Innovation Reform" in Jiangsu Province. The university traces its origins to two sources: one can be traced back to Sanjiang Normal School founded in 1902, which evolved into Nanjing University of Chemical Technology in 1995; the other can be traced back to the Mechanical Technician Department attached to Tongji Medical and Engineering School founded in 1915, which was upgraded to Nanjing Architectural and Civil Engineering Institute in 1980. In 2001, the former Nanjing University of Chemical Technology was renamed Nanjing Tech University and merged with Nanjing Architectural and Civil Engineering Institute to form the current Nanjing Tech University. The university has been selected for several national key programs: the "2011 Plan" in 2013, the "111 Plan" in 2016, and the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" in 2010. As of March 2025, the university has three campuses: Jiangpu, Dingjiaqiao, and Hongqiao. It comprises 11 faculties, 28 schools, and offers 101 undergraduate programs. It has 9 postdoctoral research stations, 9 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 3 professional doctoral degree authorization points, 31 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 21 professional master's degree authorization points. The university has over 3,500 faculty and staff members and more than 40,000 students of various types. Against the backdrop of the Qing government's "New Policies" for "promoting education and cultivating talents" and the belief that "talent is the foundation of governance," in 1902, acting Viceroy of Liangjiang Liu Kunyi, Zhang Zhidong, and Wei Guangtao officially established Sanjiang Normal School. In 1905, due to provincial boundary disputes and local gentry opposition, the school was renamed Liangjiang Excellent Normal School in 1906. After the establishment of the Republic of China, in 1915, President Jiang Qian renovated the school and officially renamed it Nanjing Higher Normal School. In July 1923, Nanjing Higher Normal School was fully merged into National Southeast University. In mid-March 1927, due to political instability, National Southeast University was forced to suspend classes. In June of the same year, the Education Administrative Committee merged nine public schools, including National Southeast University, into National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, which included a Department of Chemical Engineering. In February 1928, National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University was renamed National Jiangsu University. Due to strong objections from faculty and students, in May of the same year, the school was renamed National Central University. After eight years of the War of Resistance Against Japan, in 1945, the school began its repatriation and reestablishment efforts, restructuring its teaching programs, with the College of Engineering offering seven departments including Chemical Engineering. In August 1949, National Central University was renamed National Nanjing University. In October 1950, approved by the Government Administration Council, the word "National" was removed, and the school became Nanjing University. In 1952, China began implementing its first Five-Year Plan. Based on five departments of the College of Engineering of Nanjing University—Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Chemical Engineering—along with the Agricultural Engineering Department of the College of Agriculture, and merging with the Electrical Engineering and Chemical Engineering departments of Ginling College, Nanjing Institute of Technology was established. (Ginling College was a missionary university jointly founded by American missions in 1910, establishing a Chemistry Department and Industrial Chemistry Division in 1921.) In August 1958, the Chemical Engineering Department of Nanjing Institute of Technology was separated to independently establish Nanjing Institute of Chemical Technology. In April 1995, Nanjing Institute of Chemical Technology was renamed Nanjing University of Chemical Technology. In the second half of 1915, at the initiative of Berrens and with the support of Jiangsu provincial authorities, Tongji German Medical and Engineering School (the predecessor of Tongji University) added a Mechanical Technician Department. In 1922, the Ministry of Education approved the school's renaming to "Tongji Medical and Engineering University," and the Mechanical Technician Department was changed to an attached secondary mechanical technician department. In 1926, it was renamed the Attached Mechanical Technician School. In 1927, after the establishment of the National Government in Nanjing, it was again renamed the Attached Mechanical Technician School of National Tongji University.
