About the university
Chongqing Medical University (CQMU) is a public university established by the Chongqing Municipal People's Government and co-established by the Chongqing Municipal People's Government, the National Health Commission, and the Ministry of Education. It is under the administration of the Chongqing Municipal Education Commission. The university is a first-class discipline construction university in Chongqing, one of the first institutions authorized by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee to confer doctoral and master's degrees, one of the first demonstration bases for international students in China approved by the Ministry of Education, a pilot university for the National Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program, and a base for the Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Program (111 Program). Founded in 1956, the university was established by relocating a branch of Shanghai First Medical College (now Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University) to Chongqing. It was originally named Chongqing Medical College and was renamed Chongqing Medical University in 1985. Since its relocation from Shanghai to Chongqing in 1955, the university has received continuous development and support, achieving notable progress in faculty, infrastructure, research, and teaching. In 2002, Chongqing Staff Medical College merged into Chongqing Medical University. In 2008, the Ministry of Education and Chongqing Municipal Government designated the university as a key construction university. In 2015, the university became a co-established institution by the Ministry of Education, the National Health Commission, and the Chongqing Municipal People's Government. In 2022, the International Education College of Chongqing Medical University was established. On October 29, 2023, the Public Hospital Party Building Research Center of Chongqing Medical University was officially inaugurated. As of June 2025, the university comprises two campuses: the Yuanjiagang Campus in Yuzhong District and the Jinyun Campus in Chongqing University Town, covering a total area of 2,650 mu. The university has 8 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 13 first-level master's degree authorization points, 4 professional doctoral degree authorization points, and 12 professional master's degree authorization points. It has 22 colleges, 36 undergraduate programs, 2,497 full-time teachers, and 27,724 full-time students. In early 1955, following instructions from the Central Political Bureau, the Ministry of Higher Education submitted a plan for relocating coastal universities inland, proposing that Jiaotong University move to Xi'an and Shanghai First Medical College move to Chongqing. The central government approved the plan. After receiving instructions from the Ministry of Health, Shanghai First Medical College began preparing for the establishment of Chongqing Medical College and set up a preparatory committee. The Shanghai Municipal Committee proposed two options: full relocation or partial relocation, considering partial relocation more reasonable. The Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Health Party Group submitted the partial relocation plan, which was approved by the central government in November, officially confirming the partial relocation. Shanghai's Wenhui Daily reported: 'Shanghai First Medical College will move to Chongqing to establish Chongqing Medical College.' On April 7, 1955, Shanghai First Medical College established the Preparatory Committee for Chongqing Medical College, with Vice President Yan Fuqing as director. On May 25, the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Health agreed that Shanghai First Medical College and Chongqing jointly establish the Chongqing Medical College Construction Committee, with Yan Fuqing as director and Cheng Zhanbiao, Li Wen, and Liu Haiwang as deputy directors. On April 20, Liu Haiwang, the general affairs director of Shanghai First Medical College, went to Chongqing to coordinate preparations and was received by Chongqing Party Secretary Cao Diqiu. On May 16, Ji Zhongpu, Director of the Medical Education Department of the Ministry of Health, visited Chongqing to hear reports on the construction, inspect the site, resolve land acquisition issues, and instructed that work be carried out under the leadership of the Chongqing Municipal Party Committee and Government. On May 22, Li Wen and Huang Jiasi, Vice Presidents of Shanghai First Medical College, inspected the site for Chongqing Medical College. On July 1, 1955, the Ministry of Health approved the 'Chongqing Medical College Construction Plan,' which planned to enroll 4,200 undergraduates, invest 6.09 million yuan, and build 100,000 square meters of campus buildings; the affiliated hospital was to have 1,000 beds (initially 400), with an investment of 1.27 million yuan and 21,000 square meters of construction. In October, Liu Haiwang, on behalf of the Chongqing Medical College Construction Committee, signed an annual project agreement with Chongqing No. 3 Construction Engineering Company. However, due to the undecided relocation decision of Shanghai First Medical College, project progress was affected. On December 29, 1955, the Ministry of Health approved the first-phase infrastructure project of Chongqing Medical College. By September 1956, the first-phase project, including the teaching building, faculty dormitories, lecture halls, student dormitories, and canteens, was completed. In November 1955, Shanghai First Medical College established the Faculty Allocation Committee for Chongqing Medical College, with Yan Fuqing as director, responsible for allocating two-thirds of the faculty and one-third of the administrative staff to Chongqing Medical College. In March 1956, Shanghai First Medical College announced the first list of transferred teachers and gradually dispatched faculty to Chongqing Medical College in batches. In February 1960, the Party Committee of Chongqing Medical College expressed gratitude to the Party Committee of Shanghai First Medical College and encouraged teachers and students to uphold the traditions of the alma mater. In the early years of the university, Shanghai First Medical College provided urgently needed teaching and research materials, such as books, cadavers, specimens, textbooks, and slides, and donated a set of instruments and equipment. From July to December 1956, Shanghai First Medical College donated 1,378 pieces (sets) of instruments and equipment worth over 110,000 yuan to Chongqing Medical College. By July 1960, Shanghai First Medical College had transferred over 400 people (including a small number of family members) to Chongqing Medical College, including teachers, physicians, teaching assistants, medical technicians, nurses, administrative staff, and logistics personnel. On August 8, 1956, the two undergraduate programs of medicine and pediatrics at Chongqing Medical College enrolled 437 students. On September 1, the university officially started classes, with the first batch of 434 students from inside and outside the province entering the school. On October 27, 1956, Chongqing Medical College held the 'Celebration of the Establishment of Chongqing Medical College and the First Opening Ceremony,' officially announcing the founding of the college. It was renamed Chongqing Medical University in 1985.
