About the university

Fuzhou University (FZU), located in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, is a co-construction university by the Fujian Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education of China, and is under the administration of Fujian Province. It is a national "Double First-Class" construction university and a key university under the national "211 Project". It is also one of the first batch of universities under the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program", a member of the national "111 Plan", one of the first national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, one of the first batch of bases for the transformation and transfer of scientific and technological achievements in higher education institutions, and a national university intellectual property information service center. Founded in 1958, Fuzhou University is situated on the banks of the Min River in the western suburbs of Fuzhou. In the same year, it began enrollment and teaching, initially offering four departments: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Mining and Metallurgy. In 1962, during a period of national economic difficulty, the departments of Civil Engineering and Mining and Metallurgy were suspended. After the resumption of the college entrance examination in 1977, the number of specialties increased to 21. After more than 60 years of development, 14 disciplines of Fuzhou University have entered the world's top disciplines list, with Chemical Engineering ranking 46th globally. In 1981, the Structural Engineering discipline became one of the first master's degree authorization points in China. In 1986, it became a national doctoral degree authorization point. As of May 2025, the university has seven campuses, with a building area of 1,798,200 square meters and total fixed assets of approximately 8.1 billion yuan. It has 27 colleges (including one independent college and one Sino-foreign cooperative education college), one affiliated provincial hospital, 85 undergraduate programs, 19 first-level doctoral degree programs, 5 doctoral professional degree authorization categories, 39 first-level master's degree programs, 25 master's professional degree authorization categories, and 12 postdoctoral research stations. There are 3,355 full-time teachers and 39,333 full-time undergraduate students. In August 2025, the Academic Ranking of World Universities placed Fuzhou University in the 301-400 range. On August 25, 1958, the Fujian Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China decided to establish a new engineering university in Fuzhou, naming it Fuzhou University. In the same year, as the predecessor of Fuzhou University, the Fujian Institute of Technology, relying on Xiamen University, officially began enrollment and teaching, initially offering four departments: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Mining and Metallurgy. In 1960, the provincial committee appointed Lu Jiaxi as vice president of Fuzhou University. Lu Jiaxi, an academician, was one of the founders of Fuzhou University. In 1961, the inaugural issue of the Journal of Fuzhou University, prepared under the auspices of Lu Jiaxi, was officially published. In July 1962, during the national economic difficulty, Lu Jiaxi advocated and insisted that Fuzhou University continue to operate and retain its science programs. During the Three Years of Difficulty, Fuzhou University reduced its scale, adjusted and merged departments, retaining five departments and ten specialties. From 1966 to 1969, the university suspended enrollment. In 1970, the university resumed operations, offering three specialties: Industrial and Civil Construction Engineering, Road and Bridge Engineering, and Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering. Based on the original Mathematics and Physics departments of Fujian Normal College, the Education Department was added, offering Mathematics and Physics specialties, while the Mining and Metallurgy Department was restored. On November 2, 1970, Fuzhou University and Fujian Medical College enrolled the first batch of worker-peasant-soldier students. In 1973, Fujian Normal College was restored and renamed Fujian Normal University, and the Education Department of Fuzhou University was fully transferred to Fujian Normal University. In 1977, the university established specialties in Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Computer Software, and Computer Technology. In 1977, the national college entrance examination system was restored, and in the spring of 1978, the university began enrolling four-year undergraduate students. In 1978, the university established the Structural Engineering discipline (with three research directions: Reinforced Concrete Structures, Bridge Structures, and Building Mechanics) and began recruiting master's students, with the Hydraulic Structure Engineering specialty also recruiting master's students. In 1978, Huaqiao University was restored, and part of the Civil and Architectural Engineering Department of Fuzhou University was transferred to Huaqiao University, while the remaining part stayed at Fuzhou University, maintaining the original structure. In 1978, Fuzhou University established the Light Industry Department, offering specialties in Light Industry Machinery, Food Technology, and Food Packaging. In 1981, Fuzhou University became one of the first batch of master's degree-granting units in China, and the Civil Engineering Department was designated as a reform pilot for higher education institutions in Fujian Province. In the same year, disciplines such as Management Science and Engineering, Business Administration, and Industrial Management Engineering were established. In 1982, the university began enrolling undergraduate students in various specialties. In September 1983, the Ministry of Education officially approved the establishment of the School of Finance and Economics at Fuzhou University, and subsequently the departments of Accounting, Business Economics, and Planning and Statistics were established. In 1984, based on the development needs of disciplines and specialties, the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering was split into the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Chemical Engineering. In the same year, relevant specialties and faculty from the Department of Mathematics formed the Department of Computer Science and Technology. In December 1996, the university was included in the national "211 Project" as one of the 100 key construction universities. In 2010, Fuzhou University was listed as a pilot unit for the reform of professional degree education for graduate students by the Ministry of Education, and in the same year, it was selected as one of the first batch of universities under the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program". In 2011, the university ranked among the top 50 "National Innovative Universities for Engineering Master's Education". In 2016, Fuzhou University was approved for the first batch of local universities under the national "111 Plan" innovation and talent introduction base. In 2017, Fuzhou University was selected as one of the "First Batch of National Demonstration Universities for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform". In the same year, it was selected for the "111 Plan" for the second time. On September 21, 2017, Fuzhou University was included in the "Double First-Class" construction list. On April 19, 2018, Fuzhou University ranked 14th in the 42nd ACM Global Finals, ranking 4th among mainland Chinese universities. In 2022, Fuzhou University was approved as one of the first batch of national innovation and entrepreneurship colleges. In 2023, Fuzhou University received the "2023 China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Promotion Award".
