Jiangnan University (abbreviated as Jiangda), located in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government. It is a member of the national "Double First-Class" initiative, "211 Project", and "985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform", and has been selected for the "111 Plan", "2011 Plan", the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, the Excellent Agriculture and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program, the National High-Level University Graduate Scholarship Program, the National College Student Innovation Experimental Program, the National College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, and the National New Engineering Research and Practice Project. Jiangnan University originated from the Sanjiang Normal School founded in 1902, and went through the development periods of National Central University and Nanjing University. In 1952, the Food Industry Department of Nanjing Institute of Technology (now Southeast University) was formed from relevant departments of Nanjing University, Fudan University, Wuhan University, Zhejiang University, and Private Jiangnan University. In 1958, this department was relocated eastward to Wuxi to establish Wuxi Light Industry Institute. In 1962, Wuxi Textile Engineering College merged into Wuxi Light Industry Institute. In 1995, it was renamed Wuxi University of Light Industry. In 2001, Wuxi University of Light Industry, Jiangnan College, and Wuxi Education College merged to form Jiangnan University. In 2003, the Wuxi campus of Donghua University merged into Jiangnan University. As of December 2025, the university has three campuses: Lihu, Dongjiu, and Xiajawan, covering a total area of 4,584 mu (approximately 305.6 hectares) with a total building area of 1.466 million square meters. It has 23 colleges (departments), offers 56 undergraduate programs, and employs 3,391 faculty and staff. The student body includes 21,390 undergraduates, 14,160 master's and doctoral students, and 301 international students. The predecessor of Wuxi University of Light Industry was the Food Industry Department of Nanjing Institute of Technology. Its educational history can be traced back to the Sanjiang Normal School founded in 1902, through the development periods of National Central University and Nanjing University. It shares the same origin with eight other universities: Nanjing University, Southeast University, Nanjing Normal University, Hohai University, Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing Forestry University, Nanjing Tech University, and Jiangsu University.
