About the university

Sichuan University (SCU), located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and a high-level research comprehensive university strategically positioned in western China. It is among the first batch of universities selected for the national "Double First-Class" (Category A), "Project 985," and "Project 211." The university is also an independent degree-granting institution and a member of programs such as the Everest Plan, Strong Foundation Plan, Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Plan, and the Medical "Double First-Class" Alliance. Sichuan University was formed through two mergers of three national key universities: the original Sichuan University, the original Chengdu University of Science and Technology, and the original West China University of Medical Sciences. The original Sichuan University traces its roots to the Sichuan Chinese-Western School founded in 1896; the original Chengdu University of Science and Technology was one of the first polytechnic institutions established after the founding of the People's Republic of China; and the original West China University of Medical Sciences originated from West China Union University, founded in 1910 by Western Christian churches. In 1994, the original Sichuan University and the original Chengdu University of Science and Technology merged to form Sichuan Union University, which was renamed back to Sichuan University in 1998. In 2000, Sichuan University merged with the original West China University of Medical Sciences to form the current Sichuan University. On September 29, 2025, the Meishan Campus was officially inaugurated. As of December 2025, Sichuan University has four campuses—Wangjiang, Huaxi, Jiang'an, and Meishan—covering an area of 8,050 mu. It boasts 48 postdoctoral research stations, 53 first-level doctoral degree programs, 2 first-level master's degree programs, 5 interdisciplinary doctoral programs, 19 professional doctoral programs, and 19 professional master's programs. The university has over 9,300 teaching and research staff, more than 38,000 full-time undergraduates, and over 33,000 master's and doctoral students. It offers 105 undergraduate programs across 39 schools and departments. Historically, after the Opium War in 1840, the Westernization movement of the late Qing Dynasty sought to revitalize the nation through the principle of "Chinese learning as the foundation, Western learning for practical use" and the policy of "learning from the West to counter the West." This led to the establishment of new-style schools. The defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894 prompted a substantive transition from ancient to modern higher education, giving rise to modern institutions. In 1895, Sichuan Governor Lu Chuanlin reported to Emperor Guangxu on the preparation of the Sichuan Chinese-Western School. On June 18, 1896, the school was established on Sanshengci Street in Chengdu, initially offering courses in English and French. In the autumn of 1897, mathematics was added, and the school adopted a Western system of classifying students by subject and level.
