It is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Ministry of Education, and the People's Government of Shaanxi Province. It is a "Double First-Class" cultivation university in Shaanxi Province, a former key university directly under the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, one of the "Old Eight Schools of Architecture," an implementing institution of the "Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China," a university with "Characteristic Key Discipline Projects," and a high-level university in Shaanxi Province. The university is characterized by civil engineering and architecture, environmental and municipal engineering, materials and metallurgy, and related disciplines, with engineering technology as the main body and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. The history of Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology can be traced back to the Tianjin Beiyang Western Academy founded in 1895. In 1956, it was formed by the merger of the former Northeast Institute of Technology, Northwest Institute of Technology, Qingdao Institute of Technology, and Sunan Industrial College, and was then named "Xi'an Institute of Architectural Engineering." In 1959 and 1963, it was renamed "Xi'an Institute of Metallurgy" and "Xi'an Institute of Metallurgy and Architecture," respectively. On March 8, 1994, with the approval of the former State Education Commission, it was renamed "Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology." In 1998, the university was transferred to the management of the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government.
