About the university

Huaibei Normal University, abbreviated as HBNU, is located in Huaibei City, Anhui Province. It is a provincial key institution of higher education established by the Anhui Provincial People's Government and approved by the Ministry of Education. The university has been recognized as a model unit of civilization for the 10th and 11th sessions in Anhui Province, the first batch of civilized units in the education system of Anhui Province, the first batch of civilized campuses in Anhui Province, a pioneer in curriculum ideological and political construction in Anhui Province, an advanced unit for talent work in Anhui Province, an advanced collective for employment work in Anhui Province, and a national advanced unit for social practice of college students. It has been selected into the Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China (Phase II), the Anhui Province Peak Discipline Construction Plan, and the National Training Plan for Primary and Secondary School Teachers. The university was founded in 1974 as the Huaibei Branch of Anhui Normal University. In December 1978, it was officially named Huaibei Coal Industry Teachers College, under the former Ministry of Coal Industry. In September 1998, it adopted a management system of 'joint construction by the central and local governments, with Anhui Province as the main manager.' In 2003, it was granted the right to confer master's degrees. In 2009, it was listed as a provincial-level doctoral degree-granting unit and postdoctoral training unit. In March 2010, it was renamed Huaibei Normal University. In 2018, it passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation by the Ministry of Education. As of March 2025, the university has two campuses, Xiangshan and Binhu, covering an area of over 2,400 mu (about 160 hectares), with a building area of over 670,000 square meters. It holds a collection of over 6.6 million volumes of Chinese and foreign language printed books and electronic documents. The teaching and research equipment totals over 36,600 units, with a total value of over 374 million yuan. The university comprises 15 colleges, 70 undergraduate programs (60 of which are currently enrolling students), 17 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 14 professional master's degree authorization points. It has over 1,460 full-time teachers, over 22,000 full-time undergraduate students, over 2,260 graduate students, and over 20,000 students in various forms of adult higher education. In 1902, it was renamed Anhui University Hall, later becoming Anhui Military Preparatory School, Anhui Army School, and Anhui Law and Politics College. In October 1949, the Cultural and Education Department of the East China Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Higher Education Office of the Nanjing Military Control Commission of the People's Liberation Army decided to merge the National Anhui University in Anqing and Anhui College in Wuhu to form a new Anhui University (the predecessor of Anhui Normal University), located at Zheshan in Wuhu. In July 1974, the Anhui Provincial Education Bureau verbally agreed to the establishment of a university branch in Huaibei. On September 12, 1974, the Anhui Provincial Revolutionary Committee issued a document approving the establishment of the Huaibei Branch of Anhui Normal University, with four departments: Chinese, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, offering a three-year program. On October 29, 1974, the Huaibei Branch of Anhui Normal University officially opened. On July 21, 1978, the Anhui Provincial Revolutionary Committee and the Ministry of Coal Industry jointly submitted a report to the State Council requesting the transformation of the Huaibei Branch of Anhui Normal University into Huaibei Coal Industry Teachers College. On December 28, 1978, the Ministry of Education announced that the State Council had approved the establishment of Huaibei Coal Industry Teachers College, which would recruit students nationwide. The college was jointly managed by the ministry and the province, with the ministry taking the lead.
