About the university
Zhejiang University of Technology (ZJUT), located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, is a full-time regular institution of higher education sponsored by the People's Government of Zhejiang Province. It is the first province-ministry co-built university in the eastern coastal region, one of the first batch of key construction universities in Zhejiang jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Zhejiang Province, and the first leading university of the national "2011 Plan." Zhejiang University of Technology was founded in 1953, with its origins tracing back to the Zhejiang Intermediate Industrial School established in 1910. It has undergone several development stages, including Hangzhou Chemical School, Zhejiang Chemical Engineering College, Zhejiang Institute of Chemical Technology, and Zhejiang Institute of Technology. It was renamed Zhejiang University of Technology in 1993. In 1994, 1999, and 2001, Zhejiang Economic Management Cadre Institute, Hangzhou Shipbuilding Industry School, and Zhejiang Building Materials Industry School were successively merged into the university. In June 2009, the People's Government of Zhejiang Province and the Ministry of Education signed a co-building agreement, bringing the university into the ranks of province-ministry co-built universities. In May 2013, it became the leading university of the first batch of collaborative innovation centers recognized by the national "2011 Plan." In April 2015, it was selected as one of the first batch of "Provincial Key Construction Universities" in Zhejiang. As of February 2025, Zhejiang University of Technology has three campuses: Zhaohui, Pingfeng, and Moganshan, covering a total area of 3,334 mu (about 222 hectares), with a library collection of over 13.56 million volumes. It has 27 secondary colleges, 1 independent college, and offers 64 undergraduate programs. It has 13 postdoctoral research stations, 16 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 5 categories of professional doctoral degrees, 31 first-level master's degree authorization points, 3 second-level master's degree authorization points not covered by first-level disciplines, and 23 categories of professional master's degrees. The university has over 21,000 full-time undergraduate students, over 16,000 graduate students of various types, and over 1,300 international students. It has 3,600 faculty and staff, including 2,400 full-time teachers. Its Chemical Engineering and Technology and Applied Chemistry programs are national characteristic specialties. Zhejiang University of Technology has gone through five development stages: Hangzhou Chemical Industry School, Zhejiang Chemical Engineering College, Zhejiang Institute of Chemical Technology, Zhejiang Institute of Technology, and Zhejiang University of Technology. In June 1953, the Central People's Government's Ministry of Heavy Industry announced the establishment of Hangzhou Chemical Industry School, merging the chemical engineering departments of Wenzhou Industrial School in Zhejiang, Hangzhou Industrial School in Zhejiang, and Suzhou Senior Industrial Technical School in Jiangsu, and selected a site in Hangzhou for the school. The school was named Hangzhou Chemical Industry School of the Central People's Government's Ministry of Heavy Industry, opened on September 14 of the same year, and set up a Wenzhou branch. It offered three majors: Inorganic Chemical Technology, Analytical Chemistry, and Chemical Plant Machinery and Equipment, with 835 students and 152 faculty and staff. The branch was dissolved in September 1954. In June 1958, Hangzhou Chemical Industry School came under the leadership of the People's Committee of Zhejiang Province and was renamed Zhejiang Chemical Engineering College. That year, it began enrolling junior college students, offering five junior college majors: Basic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Machinery, and Organic Synthesis, with a two-year program. Additionally, it admitted junior high school graduates under the name of five-year programs in Chemical Machinery and Chemical Engineering (soon changed to two-year preparatory courses, after which students would take exams for undergraduate programs). The total number of majors reached 12 (including seven secondary specialized majors: Inorganic Chemical Technology, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Plant Equipment, Oil Refining Technology, Organic Chemistry, and Chemical Instrumentation). In February 1960, Zhejiang Province decided to establish a chemical industry base integrating production, teaching, and research based on Zhejiang Chemical Engineering College, merging with Quzhou Chemical Engineering College to establish Zhejiang Institute of Chemical Technology. The campus was located at the foot of Lanke Mountain, 12 kilometers south of Quzhou City. Construction began in February 1960, and 12,500 square meters of school buildings were completed in half a year. In September of the same year, teaching was conducted in both Quzhou and Hangzhou. At the start of the semester, the school was named Wuxijiang Chemical Institute. In August 1962, it was renamed Zhejiang Institute of Chemical Technology; at the same time, the Hangzhou branch was dissolved, and the secondary specialized school was restored as Hangzhou Chemical Industry School, under the leadership of the Zhejiang Provincial Chemical Industry Bureau. In July 1963, Zhejiang Institute of Chemical Technology and Hangzhou Chemical Industry School were again placed under the leadership of the Ministry of Chemical Industry. Zhejiang Institute of Chemical Technology moved back to its original site in Hangzhou (Zhejiang Chemical Engineering College), and the two schools shared the campus of Hangzhou Chemical Industry School. In November 1965, the school was again placed under the management of Zhejiang Province, and Zhejiang Institute of Chemical Technology moved back to its original site in Quzhou, while Hangzhou Chemical Industry School remained in Hangzhou under the leadership of the Provincial Chemical Industry Bureau. From 1960 to 1965, Zhejiang Institute of Chemical Technology experienced "five years and three relocations." In May 1966, the Cultural Revolution began, and the management of Zhejiang Institute of Chemical Technology was paralyzed; enrollment was suspended for four consecutive years. In July 1970, during the merger and abolition of higher education institutions in the province, Hangzhou Chemical Industry School was abolished and merged into Zhejiang Institute of Chemical Technology.
