About the university
Nantong University (abbreviated as NTU) is a comprehensive university located in Nantong City, Jiangsu Province. It is jointly established by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Transport, and is under the administration of Jiangsu Province. The university is part of the Jiangsu High-Level University Construction Peak Plan. Nantong University traces its origins to 1912, when the renowned industrialist and educator Zhang Jian founded the private Nantong Medical School and Nantong Textile School. In 1928, these schools merged to form the private Nantong University, which was renamed the private Nantong College in 1930. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the institution underwent several adjustments in the higher education system. In 2004, with approval from the Ministry of Education, the former Nantong Medical College, Nantong Institute of Technology, and Nantong Teachers College merged to establish the current Nantong University. It became one of the first institutions in China to confer master's degrees in 1981 and was authorized to confer doctoral degrees in 2013. In 2009, it became a university jointly built by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Transport, and in 2017, it was selected as a cultivation and support university for the Jiangsu High-Level University Construction Plan. As of March 2026, Nantong University has three campuses: Seyuan Campus, Qixiu Campus, and Qidong Campus, covering an area of over 3,300 mu (about 220 hectares) with a building area of over 1.2 million square meters. It comprises 27 colleges and 1 independent college (Xinglin College), offering 79 undergraduate programs. The university has 3 postdoctoral research stations, 7 first-level doctoral degree programs, 1 professional doctoral degree program, 25 first-level master's degree programs, and 30 professional master's degree programs. It has 3,274 faculty and staff members (including Xinglin College), over 47,000 full-time undergraduate students (including Xinglin College), over 6,400 full-time graduate students, and over 1,000 international students. On April 25, 2025, the Nantong University Media Alliance was established. In September 1928, Zhang Jian's son, Zhang Xiaoruo, decided to merge three schools to form the private Nantong University, which included the colleges of agriculture, medicine, and textiles. In 1929, the National Government of the Republic of China promulgated the University Organization Law, stipulating that a university must have at least three colleges among arts, sciences, law, agriculture, engineering, commerce, and medicine to qualify as a university. In August 1952, the East China Military and Political Committee's Ministry of Education formulated the Plan for the Adjustment of Higher Education Institutions in the East China Region (draft), which stipulated that the agriculture department of Nantong College would become the independent Northern Jiangsu Agricultural College and move to Yangzhou; the textile and dyeing departments of the textile department would be transferred to the East China Textile Institute of Technology; and the medical department would become the independent Northern Jiangsu Medical College, remaining at the original site of Nantong College. In 1983, the Nantong Prefectural and Municipal Teacher Training Colleges merged and were renamed Nantong Education College. In 1999, with approval from the Ministry of Education, Nantong Normal College merged with Nantong Education College to form Nantong Teachers College. The Nanjing Institute of Technology Nantong Branch also played a role in the university's development.
