About the university

Henan University of Chinese Medicine (abbreviated as HACTCM), located in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, is a provincial key university jointly established by the Henan Provincial People's Government and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a characteristic backbone university in Henan Province, featuring the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) disciplines while coordinating the development of multiple disciplines including medicine, science, management, engineering, and humanities. The predecessor of Henan University of Chinese Medicine was the Henan Provincial Chinese Medicine Advanced Training School founded in Kaifeng in 1955. In 1958, the school moved from Kaifeng to Zhengzhou and established Henan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The following year, the college established the Institute of Chinese Medicine and Chinese Materia Medica, and launched the Chinese Materia Medica program. During the 1960s and 1970s, the school relocated several times to Henan Accounting School, Zhengzhou Grain College, and Henan Agricultural College. In March 1980, the school ended its wandering period and was established at No. 1 Jinshui Road, Zhengzhou (now Dongming Campus). In 1981, the school was approved as one of the first batch of master's degree-granting units. In 2012, the school moved entirely to the Longzi Lake Campus in Zhengdong New District and became a university under the "National Midwestern Higher Education Revitalization Plan," ushering in a new era. In 2013, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a doctoral degree-granting unit. In March 2016, Henan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was renamed Henan University of Chinese Medicine. As of June 2025, the university has five campuses covering an area of 1,862 mu (about 124 hectares), with a building area of 976,400 square meters and total teaching and research equipment valued at 742 million yuan. It comprises 22 colleges and academies, 36 undergraduate programs, and 2 second bachelor's degree programs. It has one doctoral professional degree authorization point in Chinese medicine, 8 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 10 master's professional degree authorization points. The university has 1,666 faculty and staff, 22,432 undergraduate and associate degree students, 3,629 full-time master's students, 265 doctoral students, and 79 international students. As of May 2023, there are 2 first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines. In 1953, the Henan Provincial Health Department attached a short-term TCM training class named "Henan Province First TCM Advanced Training Class" to the Henan Provincial Health Personnel Training Class on Dongda Street, Kaifeng. The first training class concluded in early 1954. Based on this, in June 1955, the Henan TCM Advanced Training School was established, directly under the Health Department, with its headquarters on Dayuan Kengyan Street (the former site of the Provincial Health Department). In March 1958, the school moved from Kaifeng to the middle section of Renmin Road, Zhengzhou, and in August of the same year, Henan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established on the basis of the Henan TCM Advanced Training School, becoming one of the second batch of TCM higher education institutions in the country. In 1959, the college established the Institute of Chinese Medicine and Chinese Materia Medica, launched the Chinese Materia Medica program, prepared TCM publications, and carried out integrated teaching, medical, and research work. It compiled and published two TCM works: "Lecture Notes on Synopsis of the Golden Chamber" and "Compilation of Henan Province TCM Research Materials." The school underwent several relocations: in 1963, it moved to Henan Accounting School; in April of the same year, Guo Moruo, then President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, wrote the school's name; in 1969, it moved to Yuzhou; in 1972, it moved to Zhengzhou Grain College; two years later, it moved to Henan Agricultural College; and on March 17, 1980, with approval from the provincial party committee and government, the school ended its wandering period and was established at No. 1 Jinshui Road, Zhengzhou (now Dongming Campus). In 1981, the school was approved as one of the first batch of national master's degree-granting units. In 1994, it became one of the first universities in the country to recruit international students and students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. In 2003, it was approved by the Ministry of Education as a joint doctoral training unit. In 2012, the school moved entirely to the Longzi Lake Campus in Zhengdong New District; the same year, it was included in the National Midwestern University Basic Capacity Building Project and became a university under the "National Midwestern Higher Education Revitalization Plan." In 2013, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a doctoral degree-granting unit, and began recruiting doctoral students the following year. In 2015, the school was named one of the first batch of "Henan Province TCM Culture Publicity and Education Bases" and "National TCM Culture Publicity and Education Bases." On March 10, 2016, Henan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was officially renamed Henan University of Chinese Medicine, and a new school plaque unveiling ceremony was held at the Longzi Lake Campus.
