About the university
Sichuan Agricultural University (SAU), legally domiciled in Yucheng District, Ya'an City, Sichuan Province, is a full-time regular institution of higher education sponsored by the People's Government of Sichuan Province. It is a national "211 Project" key university, a "Double First-Class" construction university, characterized by biotechnology and advantaged by agricultural science and technology, with coordinated development of multiple disciplines. It is also rated as an excellent university in the undergraduate teaching level evaluation by the Ministry of Education, a national model university for graduate employment, a national model university for innovation and entrepreneurship, a signatory university for the China Scholarship Council's High-Level University Graduate Program, and a host institution for Chinese Government Scholarship students. The university traces its roots to the Sichuan Provincial Agricultural School founded in 1906, and has gone through several historical stages: Sichuan Higher Agricultural School (1912), Public Agricultural Specialized School (1914), College of Agriculture of Public Sichuan University (1927), Sichuan Provincial College of Agriculture (1932), College of Agriculture of National Sichuan University (1935), and College of Agriculture of Sichuan University (1950). In 1956, the College of Agriculture of Sichuan University was relocated entirely to Ya'an, the former capital of Xikang Province (abolished in 1955), and became the independent Sichuan Agricultural College. In 1985, it was renamed Sichuan Agricultural University. In 2001, the Sichuan Forestry School was fully merged into the university. In 2005, it was designated as one of the 40 key universities in the National Discipline Construction Plan for Supporting Xinjiang. In 2012, it was selected as one of the first two pilot universities in the National Talent Priority Development Pilot Zone. As of February 2025, the university has three campuses in Ya'an, Chengdu (Wenjiang), and Dujiangyan, covering a total area of approximately 4,500 mu. It has 9 postdoctoral research stations, 12 first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines, 3 professional doctoral degree categories, 20 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, 20 professional master's degree categories, 4 national key disciplines and key cultivation disciplines, and 20 provincial key disciplines. The university comprises 27 colleges, 4 research institutes, and offers 76 undergraduate programs. It has 3,440 faculty and staff members, and over 44,000 full-time enrolled students. The predecessor of Sichuan Agricultural University was the Sichuan Provincial Agricultural School founded in 1906. At its inception, it mainly trained agricultural administration officials, with students recommended by each county under a quota system. It offered agricultural and sericulture specializations with a three-year curriculum. In 1912, it developed into Sichuan Higher Agricultural School. In 1914, it became Sichuan Public Agricultural Specialized School. In August 1927, the Sichuan Public Agricultural Specialized School merged with other specialized schools in law, Chinese classics, industry, and foreign languages to form Public Sichuan University. The five original specialized schools became five colleges of the university, with the deans forming a "University Committee" to jointly exercise the powers of the president. On November 9, 1931, Public Sichuan University merged with National Chengdu University and National Chengdu Normal University to establish National Sichuan University. During the formation of the national university, the College of Agriculture became independent. In July 1935, the Ministry of Education formulated a reorganization plan for Sichuan's universities and colleges. On June 8, 1955, Sichuan University established a preparatory committee for the College of Agriculture, marking the beginning of its independent establishment. On September 1, 1956, the College of Agriculture of Sichuan University moved to Ya'an and was established as an independent institution named Sichuan Agricultural College. Initially under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education, its first president was Yang Kaiqu. In 1959, the college began enrolling three-year master's students in rice cultivation, veterinary obstetrics, corn breeding, animal husbandry, and poultry breeding. On June 28, 1985, with the approval of the Sichuan Provincial People's Government (Document Chuanfu Han 1985 No. 216), the institution was renamed Sichuan Agricultural University. In 1989, under the leadership of then-director Yang Feng, the discipline of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science was approved as the only national key discipline in its field.
