About the university
Chengdu University, abbreviated as 'CDU', operates under a provincial-municipal co-construction system with the city as the primary governing body. It is a key university in Sichuan Province and Chengdu City. The university is selected for the Ministry of Education's 'Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program', recognized as a national defense education characteristic institution, approved as a pilot unit for the 'Double Ten Thousand Plan' first-class undergraduate program construction, included in the 'Priority Cultivation' category of Sichuan Province's doctoral construction unit progressive cultivation plan, and listed in the 'Gongga Plan' for Sichuan's 'Double First-Class' construction. It is also among the recommended universities for new postgraduate recommendation qualifications in Sichuan Province. Founded in 1978, Chengdu University has undergone multiple mergers, with its educational history tracing back to the Public Sichuan Superior Selection Normal School established in 1906 and the Public Sichuan Provincial City Women's Normal School founded in 1911. In 1983, in response to higher education structural reform pilot projects, the university was downgraded from a four-year undergraduate institution to a vocational college. In 2003, with approval from the Ministry of Education, it was restored as a full-time regular undergraduate university, retaining its name but being restructured as Chengdu College. Since 2006, Chengdu Education College, Chengdu Preschool Normal School, Chengdu Health School, Chengdu Railway Central Hospital, Sichuan Antibiotics Industrial Research Institute, and Sichuan Science and Technology Vocational College have successively merged into Chengdu University. In 2018, the name 'Chengdu University' was officially restored. As of October 2024, the university covers an area of 2,582 mu (approximately 172 hectares), with a building area of 1,015,100 square meters. The total value of teaching and research equipment is 643 million yuan. The library holds 2.6 million paper books and over 1.82 million electronic books. The university has 23 colleges, offering 75 undergraduate programs. It has 10 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines and 24 categories of professional master's degrees. There are over 1,770 full-time teachers and more than 27,600 full-time students (including over 2,700 postgraduates and over 24,900 undergraduates). The current Party Secretary of Chengdu University is Zhu Ming. Chengdu University was officially established in 1978 during the Cultural Revolution, initially as an undergraduate institution. In 1979, to enrich student sources and enhance teaching capacity, the Chengdu Municipal Government merged the 'Chengdu Normal School Higher Normal Class' (founded in 1977, offering Chinese and Mathematics for the class of 1977, and Chinese, Mathematics, and Physics for the class of 1978) into Chengdu University, temporarily relocating to the Outer North Huapu Road Primary School. The merged university had 946 students. In 1983, in response to higher education structural reform pilot projects, the university was restructured into a vocational college. By 1991, to align with the expansion plan for five major urban districts in Chengdu, the Chengdu Municipal Party Committee and Government requested the provincial government to merge Dujiang Education College into Chengdu University to expand scale and improve efficiency. The provincial government approved the merger, and on December 5, 1992, Dujiang Education College was incorporated into Chengdu University. The following year, the Chengdu Education Commission issued a notice renaming the merged entity as 'Chengdu University Dujiang Branch'. In 2003, with Ministry of Education approval, Chengdu University was restored as a full-time regular undergraduate university and renamed Chengdu College. On December 7, 2018, the Ministry of Education approved the restoration of the name 'Chengdu University'. The old gate of Chengdu University on Hongmen Street (1978–1980). On April 16, 2006, Chengdu Education College, Chengdu Preschool Normal School, and Chengdu Health School merged into Chengdu University. Chengdu Education College was established in 1984, with its history tracing back to the Shuxing Women's School founded in 1904. In primary teacher education, Chengdu Education College has over a century of history and tradition, exerting a dominant influence in Chengdu's primary teacher education sector. In 1904, Shuxing Women's School and Xindu County Accelerated Normal School were established. In 1996, Chengdu Adult Education College merged into Chengdu Education School.
