About the university

Southwest University of Science and Technology (SWUST), also known as Southwest University of Science and Technology, is jointly established by the People's Government of Sichuan Province, the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. It is one of the 14 key universities in western China under national key construction, selected for the second batch of the Ministry of Education's 'Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program,' and a university implementing the 'Gongga Plan' under Sichuan Province's 'Double First-Class' initiative. It is also among the first batch of 'Demonstration Bases for Studying in China' in Sichuan Province and a designated university for comprehensive innovation and reform pilot projects in Sichuan. The university traces its origins to the Chongqing No. 1 Civil Engineering School and the Southwest Construction Engineering School, both founded in 1952, which merged to form the Chongqing Construction Engineering School. After relocating through Chongqing, Shimian, and Mianyang, the Sichuan Institute of Building Materials Industry moved to the former site of Tsinghua University's Mianyang campus in 1978. It was renamed Southwest Institute of Technology in 1993, granted master's degree authorization in 1998, and merged with Mianyang Economic and Technological College to form Southwest University of Science and Technology in 2000. It was approved as a doctoral degree-granting institution in 2013. As of November 2025, the university covers an area of 5,448 mu (approximately 363 hectares), with a building area of 1.19 million square meters, total fixed assets of 2.92 billion yuan, teaching and research equipment valued at 1.09 billion yuan, a collection of over 2.7 million paper books, and over 9.02 million electronic books. It has 3 postdoctoral research stations, 5 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 24 first-level master's degree authorization points, 18 professional master's degree categories, 20 teaching colleges, 77 undergraduate programs, 2,735 faculty and staff, and over 39,700 full-time undergraduate, graduate, and international students. In 1939, the Sichuan Provincial Chongqing Senior Ceramic Vocational School and the Jiangsu Provincial Suqian Glass Vocational School were merged into the Sichuan Provincial Jiangjin Kiln Technology School. In July 1952, the Southwest Military and Political Committee decided to incorporate the Chuandong District Jiangjin Kiln Technology School into the Southwest Construction Engineering School (with a kiln technology department). In 1952, amid the nationwide adjustment of departments and institutions, the Construction Engineering Administration of the Financial and Economic Committee of the Southwest Military and Political Committee established the Southwest Construction Engineering School, and the Southwest Ministry of Industry established the Chongqing No. 1 Civil Engineering School. In spring 1953, the Central Ministry of Construction decided to merge the two schools into the Chongqing Construction Engineering School, under the leadership of the Ministry of Construction and the Higher Education Ministry's Secondary Technical Education Department, located in Shapingba, the educational and cultural district of Chongqing. In October 1958, the Education Bureau of the Ministry of Construction decided to change the school's mission to 'a higher education institution for training building materials industry cadres,' and the school was renamed 'Chongqing Building Materials Industry College.'
