About the university
Shandong Normal University (SDNU), located in Jinan, Shandong Province, is co-established by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Shandong Province. It is a key provincial university, one of the first batch of universities under the Shandong Provincial Project for Building First-Class Universities, a key university in the "Striving for First-Class" initiative of Shandong's high-level university construction, one of the first batch of universities under the Ministry of Education's Excellent Teacher Training Program, a participant in the Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Program (111 Program), and a university designated for the construction of national key Marxist colleges. The university's history can be traced back to 1902 when the Normal School was established within Shandong University. In 1950, Shandong Normal College was founded based on the School of Education of East China University and the Shandong Provincial Administrative Cadre School. In 1952, the departments of physics, chemistry, and biology from Cheeloo University were merged into the college. In September 1970, the university's administrative offices and some departments moved to Liaocheng, and in April 1974, they moved back to Jinan. In March 1981, it was designated as a provincial key university, and in August 1981, it was renamed Shandong Normal University. In November 2012, it was designated as one of the first batch of key universities in Shandong Province for cultivating applied basic talents. As of March 2026, according to the university's official website, the university has two campuses: Qianfoshan and Changqinghu, covering a total area of nearly 3,850 mu (approximately 256 hectares), with a building area of about 1.35 million square meters. The library holds over 3.654 million print books and more than 1.85 million e-books. The university has 22 colleges (departments), offers 64 undergraduate programs, has 13 postdoctoral research stations, 16 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 4 professional doctoral degree categories, 31 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 24 professional master's degree categories. It has 28,698 enrolled students and 2,806 faculty and staff. In the spring of 1948, Shandong Normal College was established with five departments and one advanced training class, with over 30 faculty members and 464 students. In the autumn of the same year, after the liberation of Jinan, the college was dissolved. After the liberation of Jinan, the East China University, founded by the Central Bureau of the Communist Party of China, mobilized some cadres, teachers, and students, and absorbed some teachers and students from the former Shandong Normal College to establish the School of Education (School of Education of East China University). In April 1950, following the national reorganization plan, it was dissolved again, with some personnel returning to East China University and some merging into the Shandong Provincial Administrative Cadre School. In September, the Central Bureau of the Communist Party of China decided to merge East China University with Shandong University, and the personnel from the School of Education of East China University, along with some personnel transferred from the Shandong Provincial Administrative Cadre School, prepared to establish Shandong Normal College at the former site of the Jinan Sericulture School on Yingpan Street in the southern part of Jinan. In July 1951, Shandong Normal College recruited over 20 teachers from Suzhou East China Revolutionary University and Tianjin North China Revolutionary University, divided the original Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry into two departments (Mathematics and Physics & Chemistry), and split the Department of Arts and Physical Education into two departments (Arts and Physical Education), increasing the number of departments from six to eight. The library's collection also grew to over 50,000 books, and a new campus was designated at the foot of Qianfo Mountain. In 1952, during the national adjustment of higher education institutions, Shandong Normal College was classified as a "receiving" institution. The higher authorities successively transferred the faculty, students, books, and equipment from the departments of physics, chemistry, and biology of the private Cheeloo University's School of Science, as well as some faculty from the Department of Astronomy and the liberal arts, 32 students from Qingdao Fine Arts School, and some science equipment from Shanghai universities to Shandong Normal College. The college's administrative offices and the departments of literature, history, education, geography, and mathematics moved from Yingpan Street and the foot of Qianfo Mountain to the commercial district of Jinan at the intersection of Jingwu Road and Weijiu Road, while the departments of physics, chemistry, and biology moved to the intersection of Jingwu Road and Weiqi Road, and the departments of arts and physical education were located on Shi'er Ma Road, Moral Street. The campus at the foot of Qianfo Mountain was transferred to Shandong College of Finance and Economics. In 1953, the Shandong Provincial People's Government dissolved Shandong College of Finance and Economics, merging its campus and some personnel into Shandong Normal College. The departments of Chinese, history, arts, and physical education moved back to the foot of Qianfo Mountain from the commercial district, forming three campuses, but the Department of Education stopped enrolling students.
