About the university

Jilin Agricultural University, located in Changchun City, Jilin Province, is a provincial key university and a university jointly established by the Jilin Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. It is included in the National 'Midwest University Basic Capacity Building Project,' classified as a Category A construction project for high-level applied research universities with distinctive features in Jilin Province, and part of the 'Program of Introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities.' It is a designated institution for receiving international students under the Chinese Government Scholarship, rated as excellent in the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching evaluation, recognized as a national model university for graduate employment, among the first batch of national model universities for innovation and entrepreneurship, a pioneer in deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, a national base for cultural quality education for college students, a national training program for innovation and entrepreneurship for college students, and one of the first batch of bases for the transformation and transfer of scientific and technological achievements in higher education institutions designated by the Ministry of Education. The university traces its origins to the Agricultural Cadre School established by the Northeast Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in Heilongjiang Province in 1948. It was upgraded to Heilongjiang Agricultural College in 1950, and further upgraded to Bei'an Agricultural College in 1956, initiating four-year undergraduate education. In 1958, Bei'an Agricultural College, Changchun Animal Husbandry and Veterinary University, and the Preparatory Office of Changchun Agricultural College merged to form Changchun Agricultural College, with the name inscribed personally by Premier Zhou Enlai. In 1959, the institution was renamed Jilin Agricultural University. As of February 2025, the university covers an area of 1,325.03 hectares, with a campus area of 347.62 hectares, teaching and research bases of 977.41 hectares, and a building area of 578,600 square meters. Its total assets amount to 3.39 billion yuan, with a library holding 1,878,400 paper books and 1,416,900 e-books. It comprises 23 colleges, one directly affiliated teaching department, and one graduate school, offering 72 undergraduate programs. It has 9 postdoctoral research stations, 11 first-level doctoral degree programs, 2 professional doctoral degree categories, 22 first-level master's degree programs, and 15 professional master's degree categories. The university employs 1,770 faculty and staff, with a total of 24,652 full-time students. In 1956, with the approval of the State Council, Heilongjiang Agricultural College was renamed Bei'an Agricultural College, starting four-year undergraduate education. In April 1956, the Preparatory Office of Changchun Agricultural College was established. In July, the State Council and the Central Military Commission decided to transfer all staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Veterinary University to local civilian work, renaming it Changchun Animal Husbandry and Veterinary University, which had three departments: Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Medicine, and Military Veterinary Medicine. In August 1957, the Ministry of Agriculture and Reclamation transferred Changchun Animal Husbandry and Veterinary University to the leadership of Jilin Province. During this period, Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces were also considering transferring Bei'an Agricultural College to Jilin. Given this situation, the Jilin Provincial People's Committee decided that the Preparatory Office of Changchun Agricultural College would temporarily not enroll students and reported to the central government, requesting that Bei'an Agricultural College be allocated to Jilin Province to merge with Changchun Animal Husbandry and Veterinary University to form Changchun Agricultural College. On October 28, the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Agriculture jointly submitted a request to the State Council for approval to transfer Bei'an Agricultural College to Jilin Province for merger with Changchun Animal Husbandry and Veterinary University to establish Jilin Agricultural College, with the relocation planned for the summer of 1958. On November 12, the State Council, the Ministry of Higher Education, and the Ministry of Agriculture successively approved: 'Bei'an Agricultural College and Changchun Animal Husbandry and Veterinary University shall merge to form Jilin Agricultural College.' In April 1958, Bei'an Agricultural College, Changchun Animal Husbandry and Veterinary University, and the Preparatory Office of Changchun Agricultural College merged to establish Changchun Agricultural College, with Premier Zhou Enlai personally inscribing the name 'Changchun Agricultural College.' In June 1959, in accordance with the spirit of the 'Notice on Rectifying Full-time and Part-time Higher Education Institutions Newly Established in 1958' issued by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council, the Jilin Provincial People's Committee officially renamed Changchun Agricultural College as Jilin Agricultural University, and Changchun Agricultural Mechanization College was converted into the Department of Agricultural Machinery.
