About the university

Wenzhou Medical University (WMU), abbreviated as 'Wenmeda', is located in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. It is under the administration of Zhejiang Province and is a university jointly established by the Zhejiang Provincial Government, the National Health Commission, and the Ministry of Education. It is a key construction university in Zhejiang Province and a high-level university construction university in Zhejiang. It is one of the first pilot universities for the Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program. It has been selected for the Program of Introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities (111 Program). It is a member of the Yangtze River Delta Medical Education Alliance and the Haixi Medical Alliance. The university traces its origins to Zhejiang Medical School founded in 1912 in Hangzhou by Han Qingquan and other scholars who studied in Japan. In the summer of that year, it enrolled its first cohort of 60 medical students. It was renamed Zhejiang Provincial Public Medical School the following year, then Zhejiang Provincial Medical School in August 1927, and Zhejiang Provincial Medical College in August 1931. In 1937, with the full-scale outbreak of the Japanese invasion, the school was ordered by the Zhejiang provincial government to retreat to western Zhejiang in October, moving first to Chun'an, then Jinyun, and finally to Linhai, Taizhou in 1938. In August 1939, it was merged into National Yingshi University (founded in 1928) and renamed Yingshi University School of Medicine. In 1943, Zhejiang Provincial Medical School was reestablished. In June 1947, the school moved to Hangzhou and was upgraded to Zhejiang Provincial Medical College. In the same year, National Zhejiang University School of Medicine was also formally established. In June 1947, Zhejiang Provincial Medical College and National Zhejiang University School of Medicine merged to form Zhejiang Medical College. In February 1952, it merged with Zhejiang University School of Medicine and was renamed Zhejiang Medical College. In April 1958, the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China planned to establish a new higher medical school. In August 1958, Zhejiang Medical College relocated some staff, equipment, and books from Hangzhou to Wenzhou, establishing 'Zhejiang Second Medical College'. Due to a shortage of campus buildings, the school initially used the First People's Hospital of Wenzhou as a clinical teaching base. In October 1958, it was renamed Wenzhou Medical College based on its location and began enrolling five-year undergraduate students. In 1961, the hospital became an affiliated hospital. In 1978, the school began enrolling master's students, and in 1981 it became one of the first units authorized to confer master's degrees. In 1993, it was approved to enroll international students. In 1999, the state-run private independent college Renji College was established. Two years later, Wenzhou Health School merged into Wenzhou Medical College. In 2002, the Chashan campus was completed. In 2006, the school became a doctoral degree-granting institution. In 2007, it was approved by the Ministry of Education as one of the first higher education institutions to enroll international students for undergraduate clinical medicine programs (taught in English). In 2011, it was approved to accept Chinese government scholarship students. In November 2012, WMU was approved as one of the first pilot universities for the Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program, undertaking two reform pilot projects: 'Reform of the Five-Year Clinical Medicine Talent Training Model' and 'Reform of the Rural Order-Oriented Free Medical Education Talent Training Model'. In April 2013, the school was renamed Wenzhou Medical University. In November 2014, the Translational Medicine Committee of the Chinese Society of Biotechnology was established at the university.
