About the university
Tianjin Chengjian University (abbreviated as TCU), also known as "Tianchengda," is a municipal regular institution of higher education in Tianjin, located at No. 26 Jinjing Road, Xiqing District, Tianjin. The current Party Secretary is Shi Qingwei, and the President is Wang Zhongliang. Founded in 1978, the university originated as the Fourth Branch of Tianjin University. In 1979, it was renamed the Architectural Branch of Tianjin University. In 1987, it became Tianjin Institute of Urban Construction. In 1996, it passed the undergraduate teaching qualification assessment. In 1998, it was approved as a master's degree-granting institution, elevating its academic level. In 2007, it was approved as a master of engineering training unit and passed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching level evaluation. In 2013, it was renamed Tianjin Chengjian University. In 2018, it passed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching work review. In 2019, the International Engineering College of Tianjin Chengjian University, jointly established with Cracow University of Technology and Bialystok University of Technology in Poland, was approved by the Ministry of Education. On September 27, 2020, the International Engineering College was officially inaugurated. On September 23, 2023, the Tianjin New Industrialization Prefabricated Building Technology Innovation Center and the Modern Industry College of Tianjin Chengjian University were unveiled at the university. On December 7, 2024, the MPA Education Center of Tianjin Chengjian University was inaugurated at the Modern Education Center. On June 26, 2025, the Tianjin Planning Exhibition Hall jointly conducted a teaching theme activity with the School of Marxism of Tianjin Chengjian University and the School of Marxism of Tianjin University of Science and Technology. On July 3, 2025, Tianjin Chengjian University was selected for the 2021-2024 Tianjin Civilized Campus list. As of December 2025, the university covers an area of 595,400 square meters, with a building area of 456,000 square meters and a campus greening rate of 41.5%. It has 15 colleges, 2 teaching departments (centers), and 1 school of continuing education. The total student enrollment exceeds 18,000. There are 54 undergraduate programs and over 1,400 faculty and staff members. In July 1978, the Tianjin Municipal Party Committee decided to establish university branches with self-raised funds. In addition to completing the national enrollment tasks for that year, the city expanded enrollment by about 8,000 students, who were trained by these branches—a pioneering move in China. On August 21, 1979, it was renamed the Architectural Branch of Tianjin University, placed under the supervision of the Construction Engineering Bureau, and implemented a system of division of responsibilities under the leadership of the Party Committee. In July 1980, the school adjusted from a single civil engineering major to three majors: civil engineering, heating and ventilation, and water supply and drainage, marking the initial formation of the professional structure of the Architectural Branch of Tianjin University. In September 1980, the school began participating in the city's unified college entrance examination enrollment. On November 23, Comrade Mao Changwu, Director of the Municipal Construction Committee, approved the suggestion of the Construction Committee Education Department: "On the basis of running the existing architectural branch well, transition to become Tianjin Institute of Architectural Engineering after three to five years." In November 1981, Director Mao Changwu of the Construction Committee and Deputy Director Tan Shaowen of the Municipal Cultural and Educational Committee jointly signed a document: "From January 1, 1982, the Architectural Branch will be placed under the Municipal Construction Committee, under the dual leadership of the Construction Committee and the Cultural and Educational Committee." In February 1982, Director Mao Changwu and Deputy Director Liu Wenfan of the Construction Committee, along with leaders from the Building Materials Bureau, Construction Engineering Bureau, Public Utilities Bureau, Housing Management Bureau, Planning Bureau, and Municipal Engineering Bureau, inspected the school and determined the school-running policy of "supported by the urban construction system, serving the urban construction system." In August, three new majors were added: architecture, silicate, and gas heating.
