About the university
Xi'an University of Science and Technology (XUST), also known as XUST, is located in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province. It is established and supervised by the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government. The university is jointly built by the Ministry of Emergency Management and the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government, a national "14th Five-Year Plan" education strengthening project university, and a key cultivation university for national "Double First-Class" initiative in Shaanxi Province. The predecessor of Xi'an University of Science and Technology can be traced back to the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering of the National Northwestern Institute of Technology, established in 1938, which was formed by merging the Mining and Metallurgical Departments of the National Peiyang University Institute of Technology, the Northeastern University Institute of Technology, the Peking University Institute of Technology, and the Jiaozuo Institute of Technology. The Mining and Metallurgical Department was formed by merging the Mining and Metallurgical Department of the former National Peiyang University Institute of Technology (founded in 1895) and the Mining and Metallurgical Department of Jiaozuo Institute of Technology (founded in 1909). In 1938, it was relocated and merged into the Mining and Metallurgical Department of the Northwestern Institute of Technology. In 1957, it was merged into Xi'an Jiaotong University. In 1958, it was separated from Xi'an Jiaotong University to establish Xi'an Mining Institute, which was one of only two five-year undergraduate institutions under the former Ministry of Coal Industry. In 1998, the university adopted a "central and local co-construction, with local management as the main" model and was transferred to Shaanxi Province. In 1999, it was renamed Xi'an Institute of Science and Technology, and in 2003, it was renamed Xi'an University of Science and Technology. As of November 2025, Xi'an University of Science and Technology has two campuses: Yanta and Lintong. It has a graduate school and 21 colleges (departments), offering 59 undergraduate programs. It has 7 postdoctoral research stations, 8 first-level doctoral degree programs, 1 professional doctoral degree program, 27 first-level master's degree programs, and 13 professional master's degree programs. The university has over 2,400 faculty and staff, including over 1,600 full-time teachers, and about 27,000 full-time students. The predecessor of Xi'an University of Science and Technology can be traced back to the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering of the National Northwestern Institute of Technology, established in 1938, which was formed by merging the Mining and Metallurgical Departments of several institutions, including the former National Peiyang University Institute of Technology (founded in 1895) and Jiaozuo Institute of Technology (founded in 1909). The Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering initially hired Professor Ren Dianyuan as the director, and the faculty included Ren Dianyuan, Wei Shoukun, Zhang Bosheng, Lei Zuowen, Ma Zaizhi, Li Yuqing, Wang Ziyou, and Shi Xinpu. After liberation, the department was renamed the Department of Mining, with Professor Hou Yunguang as the department head. In 1952, there was consideration to separate the Department of Mining from the Northwestern Institute of Technology to establish a specialized mining institution, but it was not realized due to insufficient conditions. In 1954, the Shaanxi Provincial Party Committee considered establishing a school in Xi'an to train senior technical personnel for the coal industry, but it was also not realized due to insufficient conditions. In July 1957, the Department of Mining Engineering of the Northwestern Institute of Technology was transferred to Xi'an Jiaotong University, which had moved to Xi'an. The geological teaching and research group was separated and merged with faculty from Xi'an Power Institute and the Northwest Agricultural Institute in hydrogeology and engineering geology to form the Department of Geology of Xi'an Jiaotong University, with Professor Yuan Yaoting as the department head, while Professor Hou Yunguang continued as the head of the Department of Mining. In July 1958, the Shaanxi Provincial People's Committee approved the establishment of Xi'an Mining Institute based on the coal industry development needs in the second five-year plan of the Northwest Cooperation Zone, and a preparatory committee was formed, with Zhang Huaxin as director, Hao Yao and Su Zhuang as deputy directors, and members including He Neng, Hou Yunguang, Yuan Yaoting, etc. The preparatory committee was responsible for daily preparatory work and held its first plenary meeting on August 1, 1958, to deploy preparatory work. In 1958, the Shaanxi Provincial People's Committee and the Higher Education Bureau decided to transfer the two departments of Mining and Geology of Xi'an Jiaotong University, along with their complete equipment, materials, students, and faculty, to the Shaanxi Provincial Coal Industry Bureau Cadre School, using this as a foundation to establish a new school covering 103 mu. With support from various parties, after the preparatory work was completed, on September 15, 1958, Xi'an Mining Institute held its opening ceremony at the Jixiangcun campus in Xi'an, announcing its establishment under the Ministry of Coal Industry. In 1998, the institute was transferred to the management of Shaanxi Province, adopting a central and local co-construction model. In 1999 and 2003, the institute was renamed "Xi'an Institute of Science and Technology" and "Xi'an University of Science and Technology" respectively. As of March 2024, the university is jointly built by the Ministry of Emergency Management and the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government, a university implementing the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, a university implementing the national high-level university public graduate program, a university implementing the national characteristic key discipline project, a university implementing the national basic capacity building project for central and western universities, a national "14th Five-Year Plan" education strengthening project university, a high-level university construction university in Shaanxi Province, and a key cultivation university for national "Double First-Class" initiative in Shaanxi Province. It is an important base for talent cultivation and scientific innovation in energy and safety fields in western China. In 2022, the Safety Science and Engineering discipline achieved a historic breakthrough in the new round of discipline evaluation. In February 2025, Xi'an University of Science and Technology inaugurated four colleges: the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the School of Excellent Engineers, the School of Energy and Mining Engineering, and the School of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science. On March 2, the university's teaching and research practice base was inaugurated at the National Mine Emergency Rescue Shandong Energy Team. On April 2, the New Power System Research Institute of Xi'an University of Science and Technology was established. On April 13, the Smart Sports and Life Health Research Center of Xi'an University of Science and Technology was inaugurated. On the afternoon of April 21, a strategic cooperation agreement signing ceremony was held between China Machinery Industry Group's China United Northwest Institute and Xi'an University of Science and Technology. On the afternoon of June 25, the Low-Altitude Economy Technology Research Institute of Xi'an University of Science and Technology was inaugurated and a construction seminar was held in the second conference room of Lishan Campus, Lintong Campus. On November 19, the Urban Renewal Research Institute of Xi'an University of Science and Technology was established.
