About the university
Shanghai University of Electric Power, located in Shanghai, is a full-time regular institution of higher education jointly established by the central government and the Shanghai municipal government, and under the administration of Shanghai. It is selected into the first batch of the Ministry of Education's 'Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program' pilot institutions, the first batch of Shanghai's demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and the Shanghai high-level local university construction project. It is the only electric power undergraduate university in southern China, serving as the chair unit of the Global Energy Interconnection University Alliance, the permanent chair unit of the ADEPT International Electric Power University Alliance, and a founding member of the Belt and Road Electric Power University Alliance and the Belt and Road Electric Power Industry-University-Research Alliance. Founded in 1951, the university has evolved through several stages: Shanghai Electric Industry School, Shanghai Power School, Shanghai Electric Power School, Shanghai Electric Power Junior College, and Shanghai Electric Power College. In January 1985, approved by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power, it was renamed Shanghai Electric Power College and began offering undergraduate programs. It was long under the management of the national power department, localized in 2000, started master's programs in 2006, and became a doctoral degree-granting institution in 2018. In December 2018, it was renamed Shanghai University of Electric Power with approval from the Ministry of Education. On July 26, 2025, the New Energy Storage Engineering Research Center of Shanghai University of Electric Power was inaugurated. In April 2026, the university plans to add three new majors: Resource Recycling Science and Engineering, Smart Grid Information Engineering, and Energy Economics. As of November 2022, the campus covers an area of 692,300 square meters. As of February 2025, it has one first-level doctoral discipline authorization point. As of May 2025, it has two campuses (Yangpu and Pudong), 13 secondary colleges, 40 undergraduate majors, 9 first-level master's degree authorization points, 6 professional master's degree categories, 1 doctoral degree authorization point, and 1 postdoctoral research station. It has over 15,000 full-time students and over 1,200 faculty and staff. On October 15, 1951, Shanghai Electric Industry School was established. In June 1952, it was renamed Shanghai Electric Power Industry School, and in November 1953, it was renamed Shanghai Power School. Starting in 1958, the school adhered to the integration of education and productive labor, exploring a path for technical secondary schools suited to China's conditions. Under the new circumstances requiring more high-level talents for China's electric power industry, the school prepared to establish Shanghai Electric Power College based on Shanghai Power School as required by the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power. In 1960, the East China Electric Power Administration merged Shanghai Amateur Power School and Shanghai Electric Power Industry Junior College into Shanghai Electric Power College, and the institution was renamed Shanghai Electric Power Industry Junior College. After 1960, the school began comprehensive exploration of specialty construction and educational reform to meet new demands for higher education and talent in the electric power industry. In 1965, it was renamed Half-Work Half-Study Shanghai Electric Power Junior College, adding three specialties: Power Plant Power Grid and Power System, Power Plant Chemistry, and Thermal Measurement Instruments and Automation. In 1974, it was renamed East China Electric Power Administration July 21 Workers' University, and it edited the teaching syllabi for over ten specialized courses revised by the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power. In January 1985, approved by the Ministry of Education, the school was upgraded to Shanghai Electric Power College, offering 12 undergraduate programs with a four-year duration. The college was under the dual leadership of the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power and the Shanghai municipal government, with the ministry taking the primary role.
