About the university

Dalian Medical University (DMU), established by the Liaoning Provincial People's Government, is a full-time undergraduate institution and a key university in Liaoning Province's "Double First-Class" initiative. It is one of the first pilot universities for the national "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program," one of the first demonstration bases for international students in China, and a university included in the Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China. The university focuses on medicine while developing multidisciplinary fields including science, engineering, management, arts, law, and philosophy. Founded in 1947 as Guandong Medical College, it was merged into Dalian University in 1949 and became Dalian University Medical College. In 1950, Dalian University was dissolved, and the medical college became independent as Dalian Medical College. In 1969, the entire college moved south to Zunyi, Guizhou, to establish Zunyi Medical College. It was reestablished at its original site in Dalian in 1978 and renamed Dalian Medical University in 1994. In 2007, the university relocated to a new campus in Lüshunkou District, Dalian. As of February 2025, the university covers an area of 1.51 million square meters, with a building area of 532,000 square meters. Its total fixed assets are valued at 8.557 billion yuan, and equipment assets at 3.952 billion yuan. The library holds 1.1885 million physical volumes and 2.0765 million electronic volumes, with access to 60 databases. The university has 53 secondary units, 27 undergraduate programs, 4 postdoctoral research stations, 5 first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines, 2 professional doctoral degree categories, 10 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, and 7 professional master's degree categories. Six disciplines rank among the top 1% in the ESI global rankings. It has 13 affiliated hospitals, including 3 directly affiliated and 10 indirectly affiliated. The university employs approximately 9,800 faculty and medical staff, with about 16,900 enrolled students. As of May 2025, the university comprises 14 schools and departments. Historically, in early 1947, Wang Bujun proposed the establishment of a medical college to the Second Interim Council of Lüda City. On February 1, the Lüda Administrative Joint Office decided to establish Dalian Medical College, appointing Wang Bujun as president. On April 19, it was renamed Guandong Medical College, and on May 4, 1947, Guandong Medical College was officially founded as the first regular medical institution established by the Communist Party of China in the liberated areas to meet the urgent need for medical personnel during the People's Liberation War and the construction of New China. The Dalian Municipal Nursing School was merged into Guandong Hospital and renamed Guandong Nursing School. In 1949, Guandong Medical College and Dalian Institute of Technology were merged into the newly established Dalian University, becoming Dalian University Medical College, and Guandong Nursing School was renamed Dalian University Affiliated Guandong Hospital Nursing School. In 1950, after Dalian University was dissolved, Dalian Medical College was independently established as a five-year medical institution, and the nursing school was renamed Dalian Medical College Affiliated Health School. Graduate enrollment began in 1955. In August 1965, the Ministry of Health decided to relocate the entire college southward for third-front construction. In May 1969, it moved to Zunyi, Guizhou, establishing Zunyi Medical College, and the affiliated health school ceased operation. In 1978, Dalian Medical College was reestablished at its original site. As of February 2025, the university has 53 secondary units, including 24 teaching and research institutions, 20 administrative and party management institutions, 2 mass organizations, 6 teaching support units, and 1 independent college, with 27 undergraduate enrollment programs. It has 1 national key discipline, 2 key disciplines of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 4 first-class disciplines in Liaoning Province.
