About the university
Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TUTCM), abbreviated as Tianzhong, is a public full-time regular institution of higher education located in Jinghai District, Tianjin. It is jointly established by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Tianjin Municipal Government, and is under the leadership and management of the Tianjin Municipal People's Government. It is a pilot university for the 'Excellent Doctor Education and Training Plan', one of the first batch of national 'Double First-Class' construction universities, and also serves as an 'Education Aid Base' and 'China-ASEAN Education and Training Center'. TUTCM was founded in 1958, originally named Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In November 1969, it moved to Shijiazhuang and was abolished in June of the following year. It was reestablished as Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in June 1978. In 1979, TUTCM began enrolling graduate students, and in 1982, it pioneered the course of Experimental Acupuncture and Moxibustion nationwide. In 1988, the Acupuncture and Moxibustion discipline of Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine started enrolling doctoral students in traditional Chinese medicine. In 1992, it became the only institution approved by the national education authority to establish an International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and began enrolling undergraduate international students in classes, initiating the model of academic education in traditional Chinese medicine for international students. By 1998, Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine had basically established a graduate training system. In June 2006, Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was renamed Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2017, TUTCM entered the sequence of world-class universities and first-class disciplines, and in 2022, it became a 'Double First-Class' construction university. As of April 2025, TUTCM has two campuses: the Jinghai Tuanbo Campus and the Nankai Yuquan Road Campus, with the Tuanbo Campus covering over 2,100 mu. It offers 32 undergraduate programs, 3 postdoctoral research stations, 3 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 1 doctoral professional degree authorization point in traditional Chinese medicine, 6 first-level master's degree authorization points, 25 second-level master's degree authorization points, and 9 master's professional degree authorization points. It has nearly 18,000 full-time students. As of May 2024, it has 4,041 faculty and staff. As of June 2025, it has 15 colleges. Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded on August 1, 1958, originally named Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It was formed by the merger of Tianjin Traditional Chinese Medicine School, Tianjin Traditional Chinese Medicine Advanced Study School, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Class, and Tianjin Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, with its campus located at No. 20 Munan Road, Heping District. In the same year, the Tianjin Municipal Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, known as 'the first in Tianjin', was renamed the Affiliated Hospital of Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 1962, Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine merged with Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the predecessor of Hebei University of Chinese Medicine, and was still called 'Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine', under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province. In May 1964, the Wangchuangchang Hospital affiliated with Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine began trial consultations, administratively under the college and professionally under the Tianjin Municipal Health Bureau. In November 1969, Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine moved westward to Shijiazhuang. In June of the following year, it merged with Hebei Medical College to form Hebei New Medical University, and the establishment of Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was abolished. The Wangchuangchang Hospital affiliated with Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was placed under the leadership of the Hebei District Health Bureau of Tianjin and renamed 'Tianjin Hebei District Wangchuangchang Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital'. In June 1978, with the approval of the State Council and the Tianjin Municipal Government, Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was reestablished at No. 88 Yuquan Road, Xihu Village, Nankai District, Tianjin, on the former site of Hebei University, covering an area of 153 mu with a building area of 44,970 square meters. That year, the college established the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine with a major in traditional Chinese medicine, as well as six other majors including acupuncture and moxibustion. In the same year, the Affiliated Hospital of Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was renamed the First Affiliated Hospital of Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 1979, Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine began enrolling graduate students, with eight disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees: Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine, External Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Pediatrics of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture and Moxibustion of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ophthalmology of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and History and Literature of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 1980, the college established the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion and compiled the first set of national acupuncture textbooks (blue-covered textbooks). The following year, Tianjin Hebei District Wangchuangchang Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital was designated as the Second Affiliated Hospital of Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, thus returning to the college's affiliation. In 1982, Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine pioneered the course of Experimental Acupuncture and Moxibustion nationwide, advancing acupuncture medicine from clinical practice to a stage combining traditional practice with modern experimentation. As a result, it won the Special Prize for Outstanding Teaching Achievements of National Regular Institutions of Higher Education in 1989.
