About the university
Hubei University of Medicine, located in Shiyan City, Hubei Province, is a regular higher medical institution under the jurisdiction of Hubei Province, independently offering Western medicine programs. It has been selected for the "Hubei Province Domestic First-Class Discipline Construction University," the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Plan," and the "Hubei 2011 Plan." The university focuses on medicine while developing multiple disciplines including medicine, science, engineering, and management. Founded in 1965 as the Yunyang Branch of Wuhan Medical College, it began undergraduate education in 1977, was renamed Yunyang Medical College of Tongji Medical University in 1986, and was independently established as Yunyang Medical College in 1994. It started joint master's training in 1995, was renamed Hubei University of Medicine with approval from the Ministry of Education in 2010, and was authorized by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee as a master's degree-granting unit in 2013, also beginning international student education at undergraduate and graduate levels that year. In October 2017, the university established a clinical college in Shenzhen, making Shenzhen Pingshan Hospital its Eighth Clinical College. The university has received honors such as National Civilized Unit, National Clinical Teaching Training Demonstration Center, Hubei "Double First-Class" Construction University, and Hubei General Medical Education and Free Medical Student Training Base. As of November 2024, the university has 16 secondary colleges, 6 affiliated hospitals, and offers 26 undergraduate programs. It has 3 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines and 10 professional master's degree authorization points. The faculty consists of 1,338 staff members, with 12,144 full-time undergraduate students, 1,544 graduate students, and 307 international students. In November 1965, in response to Chairman Mao Zedong's call to "shift the focus of medical and health work to the countryside," to improve the lack of medical resources in northwestern Hubei and support the Third Front construction, the former Hubei Provincial People's Committee decided to establish a medical college in Shiyan, named the Yunyang Branch of Wuhan Medical College. In 1971, when national universities resumed enrollment, the school began recruiting three-year junior college students in the medical program through "recommended enrollment." On December 4, the first Party committee of the Yunyang Branch of Wuhan Medical College was established with approval from the Yunyang Prefectural Committee. 00:37 A promising Western medicine university in Hubei - Hubei University of Medicine. In August 1972, commissioned by the Yunyang Prefectural Administrative Office and approved by the Hubei Provincial People's Government, the Yunyang Branch of Wuhan Medical College established the Yunyang Prefectural Health School, offering six programs including medical practitioner, nursing, laboratory science, and nursing care. In June 1975, learning from the experience of Chaoyang Agricultural College, the Yunyang Branch of Wuhan Medical College established the Langhe May 7th Branch in Langhe Town, Danjiangkou City, to provide junior college medical education. In October 1976, the Hubei Provincial Party Committee and Government clarified that the Yunyang Branch of Wuhan Medical College would be under dual leadership of the province and prefecture, with the Provincial Education Commission as the primary supervisor. In 1977, the school was approved to recruit five-year undergraduate students in the medical program from across the province, marking the beginning of undergraduate medical education. In November 1978, the Yunyang Prefectural Health School was separately listed. In 1980, the Yunyang Prefectural Health School separated from the Yunyang Branch of Wuhan Medical College. In 1985, following the renaming of Wuhan Medical College to Tongji Medical University, the school was renamed Yunyang Medical College of Tongji Medical University. In 1989, the college began piloting an anesthesiology program, becoming one of the earliest medical schools in China to offer this specialty. In July 1992, the anesthesiology program passed expert review, and the college officially started five-year anesthesiology education. In 1994, it was formally included in the national regular university sequence and named Yunyang Medical College. In 1996, it passed the first batch of national undergraduate teaching evaluation at one time. In 1998, Shiyan City Health School was fully merged into Yunyang Medical College.
