About the university
Hainan Normal University (HAINNU), located in Haikou City, Hainan Province, is a full-time regular institution of higher education jointly established by the Hainan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It has been selected into the National Training Program for Primary and Secondary School Teachers, the Excellent Teacher Training Program, the Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China, and the National College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program. It is a national demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, a pilot unit of the Ministry of Education for promoting teacher team building with artificial intelligence, and a key university in Hainan Province. It serves as a council member of the UNESCO China Entrepreneurship Education Alliance, a base for inheriting excellent traditional Chinese culture in national universities, and a station for academician workstations in Hainan Province. The history of Hainan Normal University can be traced back to Qiongtai Academy, founded in the 44th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1705). In the autumn of 1949, the National Hainan Normal College was established at Qiongtai Academy, operating jointly with Qiongya Normal School and sharing teaching resources. In 1952, it was renamed Hainan Normal Junior College. In 1983, it became the Normal Department of Hainan University and resumed enrolling undergraduate students. In 1986, the establishment of Hainan Normal College was restored. In 1999, Hainan Education College was merged into it to form a new Hainan Normal College. In 2003, it was authorized to confer master's degrees. In 2007, it was renamed Hainan Normal University. In 2013, it was authorized to confer doctoral degrees. In 2015, it became a university jointly established by the Hainan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education. According to the university's official website data as of October 2025, the university has two campuses: Longkun South and Guilin Yang, covering an area of approximately 3,100 mu (about 206.7 hectares), with a total building area of 967,000 square meters. The total value of teaching and research equipment assets is 423 million yuan. It has 25 colleges, offering 65 undergraduate programs. It has 6 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 4 doctoral urgent (interdisciplinary) disciplines, 19 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 4 postdoctoral research stations. It has 25,000 full-time students and 2,166 faculty and staff. In the 44th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1705), Jiao Yinghan, the Guangdong Circuit Intendant of Leizhou and Qiongzhou, arrived in Hainan to take up his post. He donated his own salary to establish an academy, naming it "Qiongtai Academy" after the alias of Qiu Jun, a prominent minister of the Ming Dynasty and a talented scholar from Hainan. This was the predecessor of Hainan Normal University. In the autumn of 1949, Hainan Normal College was established at Qiongtai Academy. Its administrative offices included the President's Office, Academic Affairs Office, Student Affairs Office, and General Affairs Office. The teaching institutions consisted of three departments (Literature and History, Mathematics and Physics, and Fine Arts and Music) with five majors, offering a four-year program. In April 1950, Hainan Island was liberated. Hainan Normal College was taken over by the Cultural and Education Department of the Hainan Military and Political Committee and continued to operate. At the same time, the Department of Education was established. In September of the same year, the school moved from Qiongtai Academy to Chenghuang Temple (now the Cultural Palace of Qiongshan District). In October, the school moved again to the former Tropical College. In winter, Hainan University was dissolved, and some teachers, books, and equipment from its College of Arts and College of Science were transferred to Hainan Normal College. In July 1952, a nationwide adjustment of colleges and departments was carried out. The second, third, and fourth-year students and some teachers of Hainan Normal College were merged into South China Normal College, Central China Normal College, and Sun Yat-sen University. The remaining teachers and first-year students stayed at the original site to establish Guangdong Hainan Normal Junior College. In the summer of 1953, another nationwide adjustment of higher education institutions took place. Guangdong Hainan Normal Junior College was merged into South China Normal College and Central China Normal College. The former affiliated middle school of Guangdong Hainan Normal Junior College received some books and teaching equipment from the college and was renamed Guangdong Hainan Middle School.
