University Profile

Introduction

China's most beautiful coastal university, founded by overseas Chinese leader Tan Kah Kee, renowned for international vision and academic excellence.

Overview

Xiamen University (XMU) is located in Xiamen, Fujian Province, a coastal economic hub in southeast China. Its main campus in Siming District is nestled between mountains and the sea, offering stunning scenery. Founded in 1921 by patriotic overseas Chinese leader Tan Kah Kee, XMU was the first university in China established by overseas Chinese.

It is now a comprehensive research university directly under China's Ministry of Education, designated as a Double First-Class, Project 211, and Project 985 institution. The university operates four campuses: Siming, Zhangzhou, Xiang'an, and a branch in Malaysia, reflecting its global reach.

Features & strengths

XMU excels in economics, management, chemistry, marine science, statistics, law, and journalism. Its School of Economics and School of Management are top-ranked in China, often called the 'Southern Powerhouse of Economics.' Chemistry ranks among the global ESI top 1‰, and marine science benefits from its coastal location.

In QS and Times Higher Education rankings, XMU consistently places among China's top 30 universities, with several subjects in the global top 100. The campus's distinctive 'Jiageng architecture'—red brick and green tiles—earns it the title 'China's Most Beautiful University.' Founded by overseas Chinese, XMU has a strong international heritage, collaborating closely with Southeast Asian and Western institutions.

Teaching & research

XMU employs nearly 3,000 faculty members, including numerous academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Engineering, as well as Changjiang Scholars. It comprises 6 academic divisions, 35 colleges, and 17 research institutes, offering 106 undergraduate majors, 42 doctoral programs, and 36 postdoctoral stations.

The curriculum emphasizes general education and interdisciplinary learning, with English-taught courses and joint international programs. Research is supported by national key laboratories such as the State Key Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces and the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science, along with multiple provincial-level labs and engineering centers.

Campus & facilities

The Siming campus sits on the southern tip of Xiamen Island, backed by Wulao Mountain and facing the sea, featuring iconic spots like Furong Lake and Lover's Valley. The library is well-stocked, and sports facilities are extensive.

Zhangzhou and Xiang'an campuses are modern, with advanced labs and smart classrooms. The Malaysia campus in Kuala Lumpur exemplifies overseas education. Student dormitories are comfortable, equipped with air conditioning, private bathrooms, and internet.
