East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) is a national key university located in Shanghai, directly under the Ministry of Education. It is part of China's prestigious '211 Project' and 'Double First-Class' initiative.
Founded in 1952 through the merger of chemical engineering departments from five top universities, including Jiaotong University and Aurora University, ECUST was China's first higher education institution renowned for chemical engineering.
ECUST's flagship programs include Chemical Engineering and Technology, Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, and Pharmacy. Its Chemical Engineering discipline received an A+ rating in the national discipline evaluation and ranks among the global top 1‰ in ESI, placing it at the forefront worldwide.
The university hosts a '985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform' and enjoys strong industry reputation in chemical engineering, energy, environmental protection, and biomedicine. ECUST has long-term collaborations with major corporations like Sinopec and PetroChina, and is among the first pilot units for national specialized technology transfer institutions, excelling in research commercialization.
ECUST boasts a distinguished faculty, including several members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Engineering, and recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. The university comprises 17 schools offering 68 undergraduate programs, 32 master's degree programs, 18 doctoral programs, and 16 postdoctoral research stations.
The curriculum emphasizes the integration of theory and practice, featuring the Excellent Engineer Program and international courses, with some programs taught entirely in English. Research platforms include national key laboratories and national engineering research centers, achieving breakthroughs in areas such as chemical process intensification and bioreactor engineering.
ECUST has three distinctive campuses. Xuhui Campus is located in downtown Shanghai, offering convenient transportation and vibrant surroundings, with a blend of historic buildings and modern facilities amidst lush greenery.
