Southern Medical University (SMU) is a national key university located in Guangzhou and Shunde, Guangdong Province, jointly established by the Guangdong Provincial Government, the National Health Commission, and the Ministry of Education.
As the only medical school among the first five high-level universities in Guangdong, SMU originated from the First Military Medical University of the People's Liberation Army founded in 1951 and was transferred to Guangdong in 2004.
SMU's core strength lies in its excellence in medical education and research. It is one of only eight universities in China to offer the first eight-year clinical medicine program (combined bachelor's and doctoral degrees), and a pilot university for the National Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program.
Its clinical medicine, basic medicine, and pharmacy programs rank among the top in China, with clinical medicine in the top 1‰ of ESI global rankings. SMU has 11 first-level doctoral degree programs, 16 master's programs, and 10 postdoctoral research stations.
SMU boasts a highly qualified faculty of 1,867 full-time teachers, including national-level talents and clinical experts. It comprises 22 schools and departments offering 29 undergraduate programs across medicine, science, engineering, and management.
The eight-year clinical medicine program integrates bachelor's and doctoral studies with a strong focus on research and clinical practice. Elite programs such as the Excellent Doctor Class and Innovation Experimental Class are also available.
SMU has two campuses in Guangzhou and Shunde, covering a total area of 1.68 million square meters with 1.146 million square meters of building space. The Guangzhou campus is conveniently located near Shatai South Road and affiliated hospitals like Nanfang Hospital, while the Shunde campus features modern facilities, smart classrooms, advanced labs, a large library, and sports venues.
