University Profile

Introduction

A century-old comprehensive research university with global vision, rooted in the historic city of Suzhou, renowned for academic excellence and innovation.

Overview

Soochow University (SUDA) is a key comprehensive university in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. It is a national 'Double First-Class' and '211 Project' university. Its predecessor, Soochow University College, was founded in 1900 as one of China's earliest modern universities, pioneering legal education (Anglo-American law), graduate education, and academic journal publishing.

After several mergers and reorganizations, it was renamed Soochow University in 1982. Today, SUDA has four campuses (Tiancizhuang, Dushu Lake, Yangcheng Lake, and Future) covering 4,586 mu (about 305 hectares), with nearly 45,000 students, including over 1,000 international students from more than 100 countries.

Features & strengths

Soochow University excels in materials science, chemistry, clinical medicine, law, and textile engineering. Its materials science, chemistry, clinical medicine, and engineering rank among the global top 1% in ESI, with materials science in the top 0.1%.

In ARWU and US News rankings, SUDA consistently places among China's top 30-50 universities. It is co-built with the China National Space Administration, giving it unique strengths in aerospace materials and space science.

Teaching & research

Soochow University comprises 37 schools and colleges, offering 132 undergraduate programs, 47 master's programs, 31 doctoral programs, and 30 postdoctoral stations. It has nearly 6,000 faculty and staff, including over 200 high-level talents such as academicians and National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars recipients.

The curriculum combines general education with specialized training, encouraging interdisciplinary study and offering many English-taught courses for international students. Research platforms include national key laboratories, engineering research centers, and joint laboratories.

Campus & facilities

SUDA's four campuses each have distinct characters: Tiancizhuang features historic Republican-era buildings and ancient trees; Dushu Lake in Suzhou Industrial Park has modern facilities near high-tech companies; Yangcheng Lake focuses on engineering with advanced labs; Future Campus targets emerging interdisciplinary fields.

Libraries are well-stocked with digital databases; sports facilities include a swimming pool, gym, and track fields. Dormitories offer single, double, and apartment-style rooms with air conditioning, hot water, and internet.
