Introduction

A Double First-Class comprehensive university founded by shipping magnate Yue-Kong Pao, blending global vision with local strengths to cultivate innovative talents with international competitiveness.

Overview

Ningbo University (NBU), located in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China, is a provincial key university jointly administered by Zhejiang Province and Ningbo Municipality. Founded in 1986 with a donation from world-renowned shipping magnate and philanthropist Yue-Kong Pao, NBU was restructured in 1996 through a merger with Ningbo Normal College and the Ningbo Branch of Zhejiang Fisheries College.

As a national Double First-Class university and one of Zhejiang's first key construction universities, NBU is also among the first batch of 'Zhejiang International Characteristic Universities,' fostering a strong international atmosphere.

Features & strengths

NBU's strengths lie in its unique founding by a global shipping magnate, giving it a strong overseas Chinese heritage and international orientation. The university excels in engineering, marine science, business, and medicine, with flagship programs like aquaculture, engineering mechanics, and international trade recognized nationally.

It holds 13 first-level doctoral programs, 32 first-level master's programs, and 9 postdoctoral research stations. In rankings, NBU consistently ranks among the top 80 in China (Soft Science), and its engineering, materials science, chemistry, and clinical medicine fields are in the global top 1% of ESI.

Teaching & research

NBU boasts a robust academic system with 3,525 faculty and staff, including 2,401 teaching and research personnel, among them academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Engineering. The university comprises 23 colleges and schools offering 59 undergraduate majors across nine disciplines: humanities, sciences, engineering, medicine, economics, management, law, education, and arts.

Teaching emphasizes small-class sizes, mentorship, and hands-on research. NBU hosts over 30 provincial and ministerial key labs and engineering centers, such as the National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Marine Biotechnology and Engineering.

Campus & facilities

NBU's main campus in Ningbo Higher Education Park spans 3,117 mu, featuring lush greenery, lakes, and a mix of modern and traditional architecture. Facilities include smart classrooms, a library with over 3 million volumes, gymnasiums, a swimming pool, and a concert hall.

Student dormitories are well-equipped with air conditioning, hot water, private bathrooms, and high-speed internet—quadruple rooms for undergraduates and double rooms for graduates. Multiple dining halls serve Chinese, Western, and halal food, alongside convenience stores, cafes, a bank, and a clinic.
