University Profile

Introduction

A century-old engineering powerhouse rooted in Tianjin, serving the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, renowned for innovation and international education as a Double First-Class and 211 Project university.

Overview

Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT) is located in Tianjin, China, jointly established by Hebei Province, Tianjin Municipality, and the Ministry of Education. It is the only national 'Double First-Class' university in Hebei and a key '211 Project' institution.

Founded in 1903 as Beiyang Craft School, it pioneered China's first university-run factory, emphasizing hands-on engineering education. As a research university with strong engineering roots, HEBUT excels in fields like electrical, mechanical, materials, and chemical engineering, while also offering programs in science, management, economics, arts, and law.

Features & strengths

HEBUT's flagship programs include Electrical Engineering (its first doctoral program), Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, and Chemical Engineering. Engineering, Materials Science, and Chemistry are in the top 1% of ESI global rankings.

In the fourth round of China's discipline evaluation, several programs earned B+ or B grades, placing the university among the top 100 engineering schools nationwide. As a member of the 'Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan,' HEBUT has deep industry partnerships in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, with a graduate employment rate consistently above 95%, especially in power, manufacturing, and IT sectors.

Teaching & research

HEBUT comprises 21 teaching units offering 61 undergraduate programs, with 11 first-level doctoral programs, 27 master's programs, and 10 postdoctoral research stations. The faculty includes over 1,800 full-time teachers, more than 60% with senior titles, including academicians and National Outstanding Youth Science Fund recipients.

The curriculum emphasizes theory-practice integration through the CDIO engineering model, with many bilingual and English-taught courses and international classes. Research platforms include a state key laboratory co-built with the province, national technology innovation centers, and numerous provincial labs and engineering research centers, providing students excellent opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research.

Campus & facilities

HEBUT has three campuses: Beichen (main campus) with modern facilities including libraries, labs, and sports venues; Hongqiao in old Tianjin, featuring historic buildings and green spaces; and Langfang near Beijing, offering convenient transportation.

Dormitories are equipped with air conditioning and internet, and canteens serve diverse Chinese and Western food. The campuses host innovation incubators and art centers, creating a vibrant living environment. Tianjin, a major city, provides rich cultural, entertainment, and internship opportunities, allowing students to enjoy urban life easily.
