University Profile

Introduction

China's only international university named after 'language', known as the 'Little UN', specializing in Chinese language and cross-cultural education.

Overview

Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), located in the capital city of Beijing, is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education of China. It is the only international university founded by New China that is named after 'language' and dedicated to promoting Chinese language and culture worldwide.

Established in 1962 from the merger of relevant departments of Peking University and Beijing Foreign Studies University, BLCU was originally called the 'Advanced Preparatory School for Foreign Students' and later renamed several times before settling on its current name in 2002.

Features & strengths

BLCU's core strength lies in its unique positioning as China's only international university focused on language. It is undisputedly a leader in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL), with its Chinese International Education program recognized as a national-level specialty.

The university is part of the Special Key Discipline Project and the National High-Level University Graduate Public Scholarship Project, offering multiple doctoral and master's programs in Chinese language and literature, foreign languages, and international Chinese education.

Teaching & research

BLCU comprises 27 teaching units offering 51 undergraduate programs across disciplines including literature, linguistics, education, management, and arts. The faculty is strong, with 1,674 staff members including 780 full-time teachers and 146 researchers, many with overseas experience.

Courses emphasize practice and internationalization: Chinese language classes are small-group, combining language drills, cultural activities, and field trips; English-taught degree programs are available in fields like International Relations and Business Chinese.

Campus & facilities

BLCU's campus is located in Haidian District, Beijing, near top universities like Tsinghua and Peking, offering a vibrant academic environment. The 330,000-square-meter campus is green and well-maintained, with modern teaching buildings, a library, gymnasium, student dormitories, and dining halls.

The library has a rich collection, especially in language and culture, with multilingual e-resources. International student dorms are equipped with air conditioning, internet, and private bathrooms, ensuring comfortable living.
