University Profile

Introduction

A comprehensive university in Shanghai with a strong tradition in teacher education, offering diverse disciplines and an international learning environment.

Overview

Shanghai Normal University (SHNU) is a key comprehensive university under the Shanghai municipal government, founded in 1954 as the first local higher normal institution in Shanghai after 1949. It has two campuses in Xuhui and Fengxian, covering about 1.47 million square meters in the vibrant metropolis of Shanghai.

As a university open to the world, SHNU is a designated host institution for Chinese Government Scholarship international students and operates a Chinese language education base under the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office.

Features & strengths

SHNU's core strength lies in its deep heritage in teacher education and its comprehensive disciplinary structure. As a pilot institution for the Ministry of Education's Excellent Teacher Training Program, it has produced countless outstanding educators and school administrators.

The university excels in humanities and social sciences, hosting a Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education, with notable achievements in literature, history, philosophy, education, and psychology.

Teaching & research

SHNU comprises 22 schools offering 76 undergraduate majors across humanities, sciences, engineering, arts, management, law, economics, and education. It has 14 first-level doctoral programs, 31 first-level master's programs, 28 professional master's programs, and 11 postdoctoral research stations, forming a complete bachelor's-master's-doctoral training system.

The faculty of 3,153 includes national teaching masters and discipline leaders. Curricula blend theory with practice: teacher education programs emphasize teaching internships, while non-teaching majors maintain close ties with industries.

Campus & facilities

SHNU's two campuses offer distinct experiences. The Xuhui campus, located in downtown Shanghai, features historic red-brick buildings with traditional Chinese roofs, creating an elegant and culturally rich environment ideal for arts and humanities students.

The Fengxian campus is modern and spacious, with state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, libraries, and sports facilities. Together, the campuses cover 1.47 million square meters with 875,000 square meters of building space, surrounded by greenery.
