University Profile

Introduction

China's only Sino-foreign cooperative university focused on science and engineering, blending top Israeli tech education with an international, English-taught environment.

Overview

Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) is located in Shantou, Guangdong Province, China. It is a Sino-foreign cooperative university with independent legal personality, jointly established by the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and Shantou University.

As the only Sino-foreign cooperative university specializing in science and engineering in China, and the Chinese campus of the Technion, GTIIT brings Israel's world-renowned innovation-driven education to China. Officially approved by China's Ministry of Education in December 2016, it welcomed its first undergraduate cohort in August 2017 and became a degree-granting institution in June 2021.

Features & strengths

GTIIT's core strength lies in its direct affiliation with the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, often called 'Israel's MIT' and home to several Nobel laureates. As the Technion's Chinese campus, GTIIT shares identical curricula, teaching standards, and academic resources, allowing students to earn a Technion degree.

Flagship programs include Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Biotechnology and Food Engineering, all closely aligned with industry needs and emphasizing hands-on innovation. The university is recognized as a key discipline construction university in Guangdong's high-level university initiative, and its research output and patent filings rank among the top of Sino-foreign cooperative universities.

Teaching & research

GTIIT's academic system is fully aligned with the Technion. All courses are taught in English using identical textbooks and assessment standards. Over 60% of faculty are directly appointed or selected by the Technion, and all hold PhDs from top international universities.

The university offers six undergraduate majors: Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Biotechnology, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, and Environmental Engineering, with plans to expand into graduate programs.

Campus & facilities

GTIIT has two campuses, with the north campus fully operational, featuring 102,000 square meters of modern buildings including classrooms, labs, a library, student dormitories, and sports facilities. The campus design blends Israeli architectural elements with Lingnan style, set in a green, pleasant environment.

All classrooms are equipped with smart multimedia systems, and labs meet international standards with advanced instruments. Student dormitories offer double or quadruple rooms with air conditioning, private bathrooms, and internet access.
