University Profile

Introduction

One of China's earliest universities to recruit overseas students, renowned for Chinese language education and internationalization, with campuses in Quanzhou and Xiamen.

Overview

Founded in 1960, Huaqiao University (HQU) is one of the earliest universities in mainland China to admit overseas Chinese and international students, currently hosting over 9,000 students from abroad—the largest number among mainland Chinese universities.

Directly under the United Front Work Department (Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council), HQU is a national base for Chinese language education and a center for preserving traditional Chinese culture. Its main campus is in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, with a second campus in Xiamen, both vibrant coastal cities with strong economies and multicultural environments.

Features & strengths

HQU's flagship programs include Chinese Language Education, Tourism Management, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials Science. Chinese Language Education leverages the university's status as a national base for Chinese language teaching, with a mature curriculum and extensive overseas teaching resources.

Tourism Management is a nationally recognized specialty with strong industry reputation. Engineering disciplines like Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering are among China's first-class undergraduate programs. In 2022, HQU was selected as a Fujian Province 'Double First-Class' A-level university, ranking consistently among China's top 200 universities.

Teaching & research

HQU boasts a highly qualified faculty of nearly 3,000 staff, with over 60% of full-time teachers holding doctoral degrees. The university emphasizes internationalized curricula, offering English-taught programs and bilingual courses, and jointly training graduate students with overseas institutions.

Research platforms include national-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, Ministry of Education engineering research centers, and over 30 provincial-level key laboratories. Recent research projects cover national key R&D programs and NSFC grants, with notable achievements in intelligent manufacturing, new materials, environmental engineering, and Chinese language education.

Campus & facilities

HQU has two campuses in Quanzhou and Xiamen, covering a total area of 2.2 million square meters with 1.22 million square meters of buildings. The Quanzhou campus is set in a historic city with lush greenery, featuring the iconic Chen Jiageng Memorial Hall.

The Xiamen campus, near Jimei University Town, boasts modern facilities including libraries, gyms, student dormitories, and multiple dining halls. Both campuses offer high-speed internet, air-conditioned rooms, and convenient services.
