University Profile

Introduction

A multidisciplinary university with a focus on light industry, home to a national key discipline in fermentation engineering and a top-32 food science program worldwide, known as the 'Whampoa of Salt Industry'.

Overview

Tianjin University of Science and Technology (TUST) is located in Tianjin, a major economic hub in northern China. It operates two campuses: Binhai and Hexi, covering a total area of 1.25 million square meters. Founded in 1958 as Hebei Institute of Light Industry, TUST was one of China's first four undergraduate institutions specializing in light industry and was formerly under the Ministry of Light Industry.

Over six decades, it has evolved into a comprehensive university with engineering as its core, complemented by science, humanities, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, law, arts, and education. The university places strong emphasis on internationalization, having established partnerships with over 100 universities and research institutions in more than 30 countries.

Features & strengths

TUST's flagship programs are in light industry technology and engineering. It hosts a national key discipline in fermentation engineering, which leads the field in China. Six disciplines—Agricultural Sciences, Chemistry, Biology & Biochemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, and Environment/Ecology—rank in the top 1% of ESI global rankings, with Agricultural Sciences in the top 1‰.

Food Science and Engineering ranks 32nd globally in the ARWU subject ranking, and Polymer Science ranks 9th in the U.S. News global ranking. The university has deep roots in pulp and papermaking, plastic molding, and salt chemical engineering, earning the nickname 'Whampoa of Salt Industry' for its unique salt engineering program—the only one of its kind at the undergraduate level in China.

Teaching & research

TUST comprises 17 colleges and teaching departments, offering 56 undergraduate programs, 21 first-level master's programs, 13 professional master's programs, 5 first-level doctoral programs, and 1 professional doctoral program.

The faculty includes 2,190 staff members, among them one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and numerous national and provincial high-level talents. The curriculum emphasizes the integration of theory and practice, supported by national-level experimental teaching demonstration centers and engineering practice education centers.

Campus & facilities

The Binhai campus, located in the Tianjin Binhai New Area, features modern teaching buildings, labs, a library, and sports facilities on a spacious site. The Hexi campus is in the city center, offering convenient transportation and a vibrant cultural atmosphere.

Both campuses are equipped with smart classrooms, high-speed internet, student dormitories with air conditioning and private bathrooms, multiple dining halls serving Chinese and Western cuisine, as well as gyms and swimming pools.
