Its main campus is situated in the Lingang Special Area of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, right on the coast of the East China Sea, offering a prime maritime location.

SMU traces its roots back to 1909 when its predecessor, the Navigation Section, was established. It was renamed Shanghai Maritime University in 2004 and relocated to Lingang New City in 2008. The university is part of the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program and is authorized to host Chinese Government Scholarship international students.

Features & strengths
