University Profile

Introduction

A cradle for China's diplomats, this small-scale elite university in central Beijing excels in international relations and foreign languages.

Overview

The University of International Relations (UIR), located in Haidian District, Beijing, is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and designated as a 'small-scale pilot university' by the Ministry of Finance.

It focuses on foreign languages and international issues in teaching and research, aiming to cultivate globally-minded interdisciplinary talents. Its predecessor, the Diplomatic Cadres Training School founded in 1949, trained China's first 'ambassador generals.' Over seven decades, UIR has evolved from a single-language institution into a multidisciplinary university with strengths in national security studies and political science.

Features & strengths

UIR's core strength lies in its 'small but refined' model. As a national key university, it has deep roots in foreign languages and international relations, earning the reputation as a 'cradle for China's diplomats.' Flagship majors include international politics, English, French, and Japanese, with national security studies selected for Beijing's 'High-Precision, Sharp' discipline project and 'Double First-Class' key cultivation.

In 2021, UIR gained doctoral degree authority, with political science as a first-level doctoral program. Its graduates are highly sought after by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, national security agencies, international organizations, and multinational corporations.

Teaching & research

UIR has 9 teaching units offering 15 undergraduate majors, 5 first-level master's degree programs, and 2 first-level doctoral programs. Its faculty of 179 includes renowned scholars and former diplomats. The curriculum blends theory and practice, featuring Model UN, diplomatic negotiation, and international law case studies.

Research platforms include the Institute of International Relations and the National Security Studies Academy, focusing on global governance, great-power relations, and non-traditional security. Small class sizes are a hallmark, fostering close student-faculty interaction and research participation.

Campus & facilities

The campus covers 136,800 square meters, compact yet green and serene. Key buildings include teaching blocks, a library, an international exchange center, and dormitories. The library offers 550,000 books, e-reading rooms, and study spaces.

Dormitories are four-person rooms with air conditioning and internet; the cafeteria serves Chinese and Western meals. Sports fields, a gym, and a coffee shop provide leisure options. Located in central Haidian, students can easily access resources from nearby top universities.
