Overview

Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine (HLJUCMM) is located in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province in Northeast China. Founded in 1954 as a provincial training school, it was renamed in 1996 and has grown into a high-level university specializing in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

As a recipient institution for Chinese Government Scholarship international students, HLJUCMM actively promotes global engagement. It co-established the world's first Confucius Institute for TCM with London South Bank University and launched the first overseas bachelor's degree program in Chinese materia medica in the United States.

Features & strengths

HLJUCMM holds a prestigious position in TCM education and research. It chairs the Teaching Guidance Committee for Chinese Materia Medica Majors under the Ministry of Education and leads several committees within the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, including those for phytochemistry, authentication, and reproductive medicine.

It also heads the Formulaology Branch of the China Association of Chinese Medicine. Its flagship programs in Chinese materia medica and TCM are national first-class undergraduate programs, and it was among the first universities in China to pass the Ministry of Education's accreditation for TCM undergraduate education.

Teaching & research

The university has a robust faculty of 4,228, including nationally recognized TCM experts and academic leaders. The curriculum emphasizes both classical theory and clinical practice; for example, the TCM program spans six years with intensive study of ancient texts and hands-on training.

Research is supported by the National Clinical Research Base of TCM and multiple provincial key laboratories, with teaching and research equipment valued at over 554 million RMB. HLJUCMM collaborates with institutions in Hungary, the UK, the US, and other countries on joint degree programs and exchanges.

Campus & facilities

The main campus in Harbin's Xiangfang District features a blend of classical Chinese architecture and modern facilities. Harbin is famous for its ice and snow culture, and the campus transforms into a winter wonderland. It houses advanced teaching buildings, laboratories, a library, and sports facilities.

Student dormitories are well-equipped with internet and basic amenities. The campus also includes a TCM museum and a medicinal herb garden for practical learning. Harbin offers a moderate cost of living and convenient transportation, making it easy for international students to adapt.
