Hainan Medical University

Hainan Medical University (HMU) is located in Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province, and stands as the only public medical university within the Hainan Free Trade Port. Positioned as a teaching and research university, HMU is dedicated to nurturing medical professionals with international competitiveness.

It is a pilot institution for the National Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program and one of the first batch of undergraduate institutions for comprehensive professional reform by the Ministry of Education. The university traces its origins to two private medical schools founded in 1947 and 1948, which merged in 1951 and eventually became Hainan Medical University in May 2024.

HMU's flagship programs include Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Stomatology, with Clinical Medicine holding a doctoral degree authorization point. The university offers 4 first-level doctoral programs, 1 professional doctoral program in Clinical Medicine, 7 first-level master's programs, and 8 professional master's programs, forming a complete bachelor-master-doctor training system.

As a construction unit of Hainan's characteristic high-level universities, HMU plays a pivotal role in the province's medical field. Its affiliated hospitals are among the largest comprehensive hospitals in Hainan, providing abundant clinical resources.

HMU boasts a highly qualified faculty of 11,816 staff, including national and provincial teaching masters. It comprises 20 secondary colleges offering 36 undergraduate programs across medicine, science, management, and more.

The curriculum emphasizes the Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program, integrating clinical practice with theoretical learning through small-class and case-based teaching. In research, HMU operates several provincial-level key laboratories and research centers, such as the Hainan Key Laboratory of Tropical Medicine, focusing on tropical diseases and marine pharmaceuticals.

HMU has three campuses: Chengxi (main campus) in downtown Haikou, Guilin Yang in the Jiangdong New District with modern facilities, and Longhua adjacent to the affiliated hospital for clinical teaching. The total area is 1,416.71 mu (about 94.5 hectares), featuring tropical landscaping and contemporary architecture.

Facilities include smart classrooms, simulation hospitals, and advanced laboratories. Student dormitories are equipped with air conditioning and private bathrooms, and cafeterias offer diverse cuisines including halal options.
