University Profile

Introduction

Shanghai University of Engineering Science: A leading application-oriented university in Shanghai, known for industry-education integration and engineering innovation.

Overview

Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES) is located in Shanghai, China, with multiple campuses in Songjiang, Changning, and Hongkou, covering about 1,500 mu (100 hectares). As a full-time public university sponsored by the Shanghai Municipal Government, SUES focuses on engineering while offering a wide range of disciplines including management, science, economics, law, arts, and design.

It is one of the first pilot universities of the Ministry of Education's 'Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program' and the leading unit for 'New Engineering' construction among local universities nationwide. Since its official establishment in 1985, SUES has adhered to the philosophy of 'relying on industry and serving industry,' building strong partnerships with enterprises and universities globally.

Features & strengths

SUES excels in engineering disciplines, particularly mechanical engineering, electronic information, materials science, and transportation, with many programs recognized as national first-class undergraduate majors. As a pioneer in 'New Engineering' education, the university has significant strengths in smart manufacturing, new energy vehicles, and big data.

Being a council member of the Large Aircraft Industry-Education Integration Alliance, SUES collaborates closely with industry leaders like COMAC, offering students real-world project experience. Notably, SUES was the first university in China to introduce cooperative education from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 1985, a model that remains a core strength.

Teaching & research

SUES comprises 19 academic schools offering 64 undergraduate programs, along with 1 doctoral degree authorization point, 15 master's degree programs, and 12 professional master's programs. The faculty includes over 2,000 staff, with more than 40% holding senior titles, many with overseas or industry experience.

The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning, with all engineering programs requiring at least one year of corporate internship or project work. The university operates several national and provincial research platforms, such as key laboratories for urban rail transit safety and a big data center under the 'Data China' Hundred Schools Project.

Campus & facilities

SUES's main campus is located in the Songjiang University Town, featuring a scenic environment with modern teaching buildings, labs, libraries, and sports facilities. Student dormitories are well-equipped with air conditioning, hot water, and private bathrooms.

The campus houses multiple engineering training centers and innovation bases, including a national-level student tech entrepreneurship base and a Shanghai incubation demonstration base, providing full support from ideas to products.
