Introduction

Overview

Xi'an International Studies University (XISU), located in the historic city of Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, is one of the first four foreign language institutions founded in the People's Republic of China and the only university in Northwest China offering a full range of major foreign languages.

Administered by the Shaanxi Provincial Government, XISU is a high-level provincial university and a member of the New Silk Road University Alliance, the Chang'an Alliance, the Youth Diplomacy University Alliance, and the Global Alliance of Foreign Language Universities.

Features & strengths

XISU's core strength lies in its comprehensive and deeply rooted foreign language programs. As one of China's first four foreign language institutions, it boasts library holdings covering 50 languages and offers 57 undergraduate majors, including major languages such as English, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic, as well as many less-commonly taught languages—making it the most linguistically diverse university in Northwest China.

The university holds a first-level doctoral degree authorization in Foreign Languages and Literatures, with 17 second-level doctoral programs, 10 first-level master's programs, and 11 professional master's programs, along with a postdoctoral research station.

Teaching & research

XISU has a highly qualified faculty of 1,065 full-time teachers, over 40% of whom hold senior academic titles, and many have overseas study or work experience. The curriculum emphasizes the integration of language skills with specialized knowledge, offering combined programs such as Business English, Translation, International Relations, and Tourism Management, as well as joint degree programs with overseas universities.

In research, the university hosts a postdoctoral research station in Foreign Languages and Literatures, and national-level platforms such as the National Language and Character Promotion Base and the Multilingual Base for International Chinese Promotion (Xi'an).

Campus & facilities

XISU has four distinct campuses. The main Chang'an campus features modern teaching buildings, libraries, laboratories, and sports facilities in a green environment. The Yanta campus is centrally located with convenient transportation and a rich cultural atmosphere.

Zhenhua and Yahe campuses offer diverse living and learning spaces. Student dormitories are equipped with air conditioning, hot water, and internet access. Cafeterias serve both Chinese and Western cuisine. International student apartments provide comfortable accommodations.
