Founded in 1958 as Gannan Junior Normal College, it was renamed Gannan Normal University in 2016 and officially approved as a doctoral degree-granting institution in 2024, marking a significant milestone. As a key support institution under the Ministry of Education's counterpart assistance program and the Collaborative Quality Improvement Plan for Teacher Education, GNNU plays a vital role in the border region of Jiangxi, Guangdong, Fujian, and Hunan provinces.
