Overview

Tibetan Medical University (TMU), located in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet Autonomous Region, is one of the highest-altitude medical universities in the world and the only independent institution globally focused solely on Tibetan medicine.

Co-established by the Tibet Autonomous Region Government and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, TMU is committed to preserving and advancing Tibetan medical heritage through a modern higher education system that integrates tradition and innovation.

Features & strengths

TMU's core strength lies in its unparalleled Tibetan medicine discipline system. It holds the authority to grant doctoral degrees in Tibetan medicine and master's degrees in Tibetan pharmacy, and hosts a postdoctoral research station—the highest-level training base in the field.

Flagship programs include Tibetan medicine, Tibetan pharmacy, and Tibetan nursing, with Tibetan medicine and pharmacy recognized as national specialty programs. The university boasts 8 key disciplines designated by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and 2 autonomous region-level key disciplines, leading in areas such as Tibetan medical formulas, pharmacology, and preventive healthcare.

Teaching & research

TMU offers 6 undergraduate programs and 1 higher vocational program covering Tibetan medicine, pharmacy, and nursing. The faculty comprises 311 full-time staff, including renowned Tibetan medicine masters and academic leaders.

The curriculum emphasizes a balance of classical Tibetan medical texts like the 'Four Tantras' and modern medical sciences. Research platforms include two nationally funded key disciplines, multiple provincial-level labs, and research centers.

Campus & facilities

TMU's two campuses, Yaowangshan and Shanjiancheng, are located in central Lhasa with convenient transportation. Yaowangshan campus sits near the famous Medicine King Mountain, offering a serene environment with traditional Tibetan architecture and modern classrooms.

Shanjiancheng campus features newer facilities, including multimedia classrooms, a Tibetan herbarium, simulation clinics, and a library. Student dormitories are well-equipped with internet and heating. The campus includes a medicinal herb garden and a traditional Tibetan medical clinic, allowing students hands-on exposure.
