University Profile

Introduction

China's only undergraduate university specializing in disaster prevention, focusing on seismology, emergency management, and hazard mitigation for global safety.

Overview

The Institute of Disaster Prevention (IDP) is a public undergraduate institution located in Yanjiao National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, Langfang, Hebei Province, adjacent to Beijing. Approved by the Ministry of Education and led by the China Earthquake Administration (now under the Ministry of Emergency Management), IDP originated from the State Seismological Bureau Tianshui Seismological School founded in 1975.

It was upgraded to a bachelor's degree-granting college in 2006, approved as a master's degree unit in 2024, and merged with North China Institute of Science and Technology in 2026 to form the University of Emergency Management, while retaining its distinctive focus.

Features & strengths

IDP's core strength lies in its unique academic positioning—specializing in natural disaster prevention and emergency management. Flagship programs include Geophysics (earthquake monitoring and prediction), Geology (engineering seismology and hazard assessment), Disaster Prevention Science and Engineering, and Emergency Technology and Management.

Geophysics is a national-level featured program, ranking among the top in China. The university houses key laboratories of the China Earthquake Administration and the National Institute of Natural Disaster Prevention, undertaking major national science projects and providing critical technical support during earthquakes like Wenchuan and Yushu.

Teaching & research

Academically, IDP boasts a highly qualified faculty of 1,633 full-time teachers, over 50% of whom are professors or associate professors, including several recognized as leading talents by the China Earthquake Administration and the Ministry of Education.

The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning, with all majors equipped with disaster simulation labs, virtual reality centers, and field training bases. Research platforms include a provincial-ministerial key laboratory for earthquake dynamics and disaster simulation, and an engineering research center for hazard monitoring and early warning.

Campus & facilities

The campus features a green and pleasant environment with modern teaching buildings, labs, and a library housing 2.91 million paper books and extensive digital resources, offering 24/7 study spaces. Student dormitories are four-person rooms with air conditioning, hot water, and private bathrooms.

Sports facilities include a standard track field, gymnasium, swimming pool, and tennis courts. An international student dormitory and service center provide multilingual support. Conveniently located 30 km from Beijing's Tiananmen Square, the campus is easily accessible by high-speed rail and buses, allowing students to explore the capital's culture and internship opportunities.
