Located in Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, at the core of the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan city cluster, Hunan Institute of Engineering (HIE) is a full-time public undergraduate university approved by the Ministry of Education.
Its origins trace back to 1951 with the founding of Xiangtan Electromechanical College and Hunan Textile College, which merged in 2000 to form HIE. The university focuses on engineering while offering a balanced range of disciplines.
HIE's flagship programs include Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Electrical Engineering and Automation, and Textile Engineering. The Mechanical Design program was the first among newly established undergraduate universities in Hunan to receive engineering education accreditation, reflecting its high teaching quality.
The Electrical Engineering program, rooted in the former Xiangtan Electromechanical College, enjoys a strong reputation in motors and electrical appliances. The Textile Engineering program continues the legacy of Hunan Textile College, specializing in textile materials and fashion design.
HIE boasts a highly qualified faculty of over 1,400, with more than 40% holding senior titles and over 90% possessing doctoral or master's degrees. The university implements the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan across 8 ministry-designated programs, emphasizing engineering practice and innovation.
The curriculum integrates theory with hands-on learning, supported by provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers and virtual simulation labs. Research is conducted at key provincial platforms such as the Hunan Key Laboratory of Wind Power Equipment and Energy Conversion and the Hunan University Key Laboratory of Textile and Apparel.
Covering 1,830.6 mu (about 122 hectares), HIE has two campuses: the main campus and Shuyuan Road campus, with a total building area of 588,000 square meters. The campuses are green and well-maintained, featuring modern teaching buildings, a library, gymnasiums, student dormitories, and dining halls.
