Hainan Tropical Ocean University

Hainan Tropical Ocean University (HTOU) is located in Sanya and Wuzhishan, Hainan Province. It is a full-time public undergraduate university jointly established by the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Hainan Provincial Government, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, and Sanya Municipal Government.

The university is recognized as a China-ASEAN Education and Training Center by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, and is one of the Ministry of Education's bases for educational aid to foreign countries.

HTOU's strengths lie in marine science, tropical agriculture, tourism management, and ecology. It offers 3 first-level master's degree programs and 13 professional master's programs, along with a postdoctoral research station.

Marine science is a flagship discipline, significantly boosted by the integration of the Hainan Academy of Ocean and Fisheries Sciences. The university's location near the South China Sea provides excellent opportunities for field research in marine ecology, fisheries, and coral reef conservation.

HTOU comprises 19 schools offering 57 undergraduate and 7 associate degree programs across sciences, engineering, management, arts, law, and education. The faculty of 1,659 includes many with overseas experience. Teaching and research equipment is valued at over 410 million RMB.

The library holds 1.88 million print books and 1.93 million e-books. The university emphasizes practical training with provincial-level demonstration centers and off-campus internship bases. Key research platforms include the Yazhou Bay Innovation Research Institute and the Hainan Academy of Ocean and Fisheries Sciences, focusing on marine resource development, tropical ecology, and smart ocean technologies.

HTOU has two distinct campuses: Sanya and Wuzhishan. The Sanya campus is located in the tropical coastal tourist city of Sanya, featuring modern architecture blended with tropical gardens. The campus covers 2,188 mu (approx.

360 acres) with a total building area of 758,000 sqm. Dormitories are equipped with air conditioning, hot water, and internet. Dining halls offer diverse cuisines. The Wuzhishan campus is nestled in the mountains, providing a tranquil environment for study.
